Clamshell video out adapter

What I've heard so far is that the iBook uses a stereo minijack thing with RCA plugs on the other end for video output. Is that the case, and therefore would it not be really easy to make an adapter from a few basic components?

Early Clamshell iBooks did no

Early Clamshell iBooks did not have a video out. The port is simply a stereo out. However the later Firewire enabled iBooks did have a video out. The plug looks like a headphone plug, but it carries stereo sound and video.

Here is an example...

BTW I just gone one for a project of mine Smile

lost

Hmm it looks like it has 3 plugs on the end...sooo...how could a normal stereo minijack manage that? Is it something entirely different that just LOOKS like one?

Mmhmm

It would be just as easy to go to ratty shack and get a simple minijack to RCA adapter. But, yes, if you wanted to make one you could.

What? Spend money on something instead of hacking other things to create one? Never! Blum 3

video out adapter is a mini jack

All i know is, it works as an audio out port as well. Not only video does is give out, but you can plug in headphones and speakers and use it as an audio out port ( I do it all the time) ill see if i can make a video out adapter and let you know if it werkd

If you look at a stereo jack' (PIC)

If you look at a stereo jack's male input... you will notice 2 ridges for right and left audio. This has three. The input also has a spot for that. Its not a streeo jack... just looks like one (see pict)

Sony uses a simular plug for their Digital Video Cameras. However, it did not work with my iBook's video out. I had to order the apple specific piece.

You need the Apple one.

AFAIK, the Apple adapter is unique. You can get sound out with regular stereo 1/8" plugs, but for video you need the Apple adapter.

what if

What if one was to somehow extend a normal headphone plug so it protruded another mm or so? Is that the only difference?

Nope

As noted in the picture above, there are 4 distinct sections to the adapter plug. Regular stereo plugs only have three. The length of both is the excactly the same. Stereo plugs will only work for sound. In order to get video out, you need the Apple adapter or one that is axactly the same.
