I installed OS 7.5 over a working 7.1 installation and it went dead two days later. All I get is the DISK icon with the question mark in the middle. Every time I turn on the CC I hear the HD power up and down three times and then it stops. Any clues?

I forgot to mention that When I tried to boot on the third day, and got the disk icon with question mark, I tested the battery at .01 volts. I replaced it with a new 3.6 lithium and still got the same results. Could the cmos have to be reset? Do I need to change the bios settings after a battery replacement (PC)?

Boot from a boot disc and see if Apple HD Setup can see the drive. If it can see the drive, wipe it and reinstall. If it isn't a Mac drive, google for the hacked version of Apple HD Setup.

Thanks... I booted with the tools and utils disks from 7.5 and the HD program could not see the HD. When I installed 7.5 over 7.1 it had not problem seeing it.

What do you mean "installed 7.5 over" 7.1. How did you do that? Also, try and find some SCSI utilities to mount the drive. Apple HD Setup isn't the best.

The CC had 7.1 on it and it worked fine. I had the install disks for 7.5 so I installed over the old OS - it worked fine for several hours and I did turn it on and off several times in those hours that it was used. When I turned it on the next morning it would not boot DISK ICON with ? mark.
Are you saying that other SCSI utils could find the drive when APPLE HD can't? It just seems that the drive spins up and then down in 5 seconds.
I think I am just going to install a larger/newer drive. Do you know what 500+ or 1 gig + drives are compatible with the CC or LCIII?

You just can't install one OS over another. I mean you can, but you're going to create a mess. You can clean install one system into another but the keyboard commands for OS 7.5 to do a clean install are a tad esoteric. In fact, I can't say for sure where in the Apple OS food chain the clean install became a real option. Anybody know?
As for a new drive, any 50-pin SCSI hard drive -- for the most part -- will work. OS 7.5 will only "see" 2 gigs. So if the drive is bigger than that you will need to partition it. OS 7.5.3 will see any size drive. Stay away from OS 7.5.2. It's a dreadful piece of work.

Thanks for the help William. That's so strange; when installing over 7.1, 7.5 did find the 7.1 install and said it was going to upgrade over it.
As far as the 50-pin scsi drives I have seen some stated as Narrow and others that say nothing. There are those that say they are PULL too?
Any sites that you know of that seel new drives -cheap?

I don't think anyone is making 1- or 2-gig scsi drives anymore. Your best bet is the LEM swaplist. If you're going to be diddling with vintage Macs, it's a great resource. It's a list and you can read up on it here:
