Hay! Apple are you still making computers?

I don't know about you guys, but i have noticed a decline on Apple's emphasis on their computers. Nothing new has come out since the G5 last june (excpet 20" imac) and even the G5 has seen no changes since then. It seems all Apple cares about is iTunes and iPods. Not that there is anything wrong with those things, I just feel as though they have forgotten what made them what they are. I haven't seen an Apple comercial for their compuers for months. Only ipod and iTunes. Anyone else feel like this? They need to get in gear and start paying attention to their compuers again.

I wonder whats making them mo

I wonder whats making them more money per dollar invested? (I have no idea, I'm just speculating).

How much do they make per song sold, 5 cents (that is a total shot in the dark guess)? Thats like 5 percent profit for almost zero overhead (no stores, no employees to pay, etc etc). How much profit do they make per computer? Well I have no idea but you get the idea, can it be that the ipod is making them money hand over fist compared to computers?

Xserve

You're forgetting the Xserve G5, but you have to keep in mind that aisde from trivial upgrades with the G4 Apple's going to be moving to the G5 line, which is a world apart from the G3 and G4. They've also been moving towards portables and unless youy want a device to add grill marks to your thighs I bet they're waiting for the G5s to get to a point where they won't be selling a knock off of the george foreman grills. Give them time, theres going to be something new from Apple by the end of the year.

Right now Apple has a great lineup and they probably don't see a need for any drastic changes. They're doing well with the iPod and iTMS, plus they're not following the gateway store model for retail stores. Dumb mistakes almost ruined Apple in the 90's and I'd rather not see that happen again.

They are busy porting OS X to AMD's 64 bit chip as well as writing code to work with Nvidia's new NForce 3 chipset and ATI's new PCI Extreme card.

iTMS

Actually, they've stated that they don't really make any money off of the iTMS. It's pretty much just a marketing machine for the iPod.

I didn't forget...

Quote: You’re forgetting the Xserve G5 No, I didn't forget, it just isn't really a new computer worth mentioning. How many of us keep up to tabs on the Xserves. I bet maybe one or two of us at the most, would buy one or owns one. It is really not a personal computer. Before someone else says anything about the duel 1.8 G5 upgrade, well that wasn't much of anything. The g5's have been out just shy of a year and not one speed bump or any major change to them yet. when the G4 Powermacs came out in August 1999, there were 3 models introduced between 8-99 and 8-00 not to mention the 3 models of imac out during that time. In the last several months sinve the G5, only the G4 ibooks were the only major change.

Oh, Hazel, look. The field! It's covered in blood

I would get ready for a loooonnnnggg wait.

I would get ready for a loooonnnnggg wait. It just isn't going to happen. Apple is a hardware company, and they don't want their OS to run on a Dell. No one will buy an Apple computer if they can buy a cheaper Dell or Compaq or whatever to run OS X.

I think that now that apple has X working smothly, porting X to x86 would be the absolute worst thing to do. What would be the point of running X under expencive hardware if you could build a pc that does what you want (and runs X!) for $500?

When you produce the best com

When you produce the best computers for the cost, it get's increasingly difficult to make a new computer better than the last computer produced. Be patient, I'm sure Apple is doing great things......

OEM

But then Dell would have to buy an OEM license from Apple.
Of course, since OSX costs $130 and WinDOS costs $100, who do you think they'd choose?

Back to the topic at hand....

Apple is indeed making themselves more into a consumer electronics company, but what really can you expect? iPod and iTMS are the first apple products to dominate the market. Although Apple has not completely forgot its hardware devotees and are no doubt in the process of making specialty cooling solutions to allow the G5 processor to be had in other macs, the G5 XServe is a very good sign of things to come...
