I have an SE, with internal ethernet card. Using IP masquerading, I can share the hard disk in my iBook; now I want it on the net.
I turned on "internet sharing" on the iBook, and plugged in the SE.
MacWWW (Samba) won't load, but I figure that needs a dialup connection. I don't really NEED a web browser; the graphical nature of the web kinda nixes the usability of that sort of thing; but I would like to get Eudora set up for my yahoo account. It requires something called the "communications toolbox"-- what is that? Will it mess up anything? Will it work with the ethernet?
Please let me know.
When you turn on internet sharing on the iBook, it also turns on a DHCP server for the sharing port. The SE doesn't do DHCP, so you'll have to find out what address range the iBook is trying to use and manually setup the SE to use something similar. FWIK, my Macs tend to use the range of 192.168.2.x for shared machines. Set eh SE to something like 192.168.2.20, set it's netmask as 255.255.255.0, set the gateway and DNS as 192.168.2.1 and the SE should work just fine. Of course, adjust the IP numbers as fits for what your iBook wants to serve out. You should be able to find that in either System Preferences -> Network, or in Terminal as 'ifconfig', nad look for the en0 or en1 sections. It should be a 192.168.x.x class number.
This morning, started up both computers. Whenever I try to connect to the iBook, I get the message "There is no response from the server. Please try again."
:? What happened??
Is internet sharing still turned on? If so, that has changed the IP addy that the iBook was using on your internal network.
DHCP should work, it works on my mac plus. Try setting it to connect via TCP/IP or ethernet or Ethertalk in the MacTCP Control Pane. Then choose automatic for the ip address under more...

I changed the IP address and routing information and plugged it into my switch.
Ha ha! Now I don't have to worry about the iBook being a) plugged in or b) the settings being changed.
