I recently had my Classic ][ fixed (It had that vertical lines at startup problem) however, the image on the screen is rather small for some reason, and I was looking through the service manual about how you can adjust it. however, by the looks of things, this was only supposed to be done by a serviceman, so do you think I should still do it?
Also, when I shut it down, the screen goes blank for a second, then the message appears. Is this normal (The shutdown message showed instantly on my old Classic) or I'm I just being paranoid?

I adjusted it with my classic, and its not too hard or dangerous. Go ahead and do it.
