Power Adapter Tip

Is it possible for a rookie to replace the tip of a 45-watt power adapter for the dual USB iBook?

If so, does anyone have one?

contact me at netjake_1 Angel yahoo (dot) com

Thank you

replace the entire adapter

The tip is an Apple special, AFAIK not available anywhere. Best bet is to just bite the bullet and buy another power supply. Keep the broken power supply in the hope that one day you'll find a dead PS with a good plug.

The center is basically a 3/32" stereo plug, but since the positive contact is the base, it ain't exactly easy to make from a regular stereo plug. I did build one as part of an adapter to go from older PowerBook PSs to later 'Books. I had to mill off the surrounding base of the plug and then mold what remained inside a cast epoxy body, along with a fabbed outer sleeve. Not something I'd do again, it was just too much bother.

It is possible to use just a 3/32" stereo plug, but except in an emergency, don't, for without the surrounding sleeve it's waaay too easy to break the power input jack on the 'Book. The plug needs the sleeve to keep the plug itself from moving about. Oh, and you may short the positive to the outer grounded contact in the 'Book, not fatal but that does shut the PS down temporarily.

re: Power Adapter Tip

I recently "discovered" these Targus adapter tips, at US$10 apiece (+ shipping of course.)

size for pre-G4 PBooks and pre-DualUSB iBooks:
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=APT8
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=APTS8

size for G4 PBooks and DualUSB (+ later) iBooks:
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=APT15
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=APTS15

I'm not sure what the connection on the Targus side of the tip looks like. Since I haven't one on hand, maybe someone who has one could give details on what the Targus side looks like.

Hey, if you replicated the Targus end, with both tip sizes on hand you could power most any generation of Apple portable* from the one adapter.

*'cept of course the 1XX, 5XX and 190 5300 series
