Mac System 6 800k Disks

I live in Paris and have recently found an old Mac SE. It has the 20mb HD, 800k floppy and 1mb ram. It has no keyboard or mouse. I can get the keyboard and mouse easily but the operating system I just cannot find. I know you can download it from Apple but i have no way to then write the file to a 800k disk as I only have a PC. Is there any way anyone can get me a the System 6 OS on 800k floppy disks please if so please IM me and i will give you my adress or email andymol21@hotmail.com and i will try and get back to you i am willing to pay around €10.

Many Thanks

Andrew Ryan

Re: does it boot?

It starts up with a little flashing disk with a question mark inside it. I am a complete novice at Macs so any help is greatly appreciated

That's a bootie!

Hey,

That means it works but doesn't have a system installed or available on a boot disk.

If you can't find another Mac

If you can't find another Mac to create the floppies, just search your preferred online auction for a 1,4 meg floppy drive. They cost next to nothing. Just make sure you get a working one.

Or you can contact the owner of the Mac Plus webserver at http://aurejac.dyndns.org/ (it's down as I'm writing this, but is usually up and running, so try later). The guy lives in France, as far as I remember.

SE Floppy

Hey,

You can't replace an 800k floppy on an SE with a 1.4 MB floppy without upgrading the SWIM ROM. It won't work. That's Super Woz Intergrated Memory (I think). So keep that in mind.

New Mac

I found this Mac on the street so I don't really want to buy another one just to get this one working. If it is too difficult then I will just keep it as a display piece. All I really want is for someone to send me a 800k floppy of system 6 so that I can play around with it. As I said I am a complete novice at Macs but I really am starting to love the way that the classic Macs work. If anyone can help me then please do!

Thanks
Andrew

Right. A ROM chip from an SE FDHD model would be required for the original SE to recognize the drive as a 1,44 MB type, and not 800 kB.

Andymol, if you're desperate, I can send you the disks for the cost of shipping from Poland (that would be probably around €10). Email me at maciej /at/ tarmas /dot/ com if you're interested.

Il doit y en avoir à Paris quand même...

You might be able to get in touch with Mac-Users in Paris via the forums of

http://macbidouille.com/

They are less into retrocomputing, but it's a very popular website with a big forum.

They also have an english translation.

It would probably make a lot more sense to find someone local, even if it is impressive that Mac solidarity would come all the way from Poland if needed...

Yes please do

Yes system 6.0.8 is perfect! Email me at andymol21@hotmail.com with the subject Disks or something similar and I will send you my address, bare in mind I live in Paris and you will have to send them by "snail mail" but I am willing to cover any costs you think are necessary!

Cheers in advance,

Andymol

I have a powerbook 145B, trying to boot it up and don't have the original OS disks. Anyway to get the disks, too, in Montana? I have mine somehwere - just moved, so not sure.

Let me know at info@onewayadv.com

Thanks

6.0.8 on 145B

hey,

No variant of 6 will boot on a PB145. You need SSW 7.0.1. You can download it here:

http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/syslist.html

It's freeware.
