Keyboard numberpad won't work

I am stumped on this one...

My wife's flatpanel iMac (800MHz., 15" screen, X.2.8 ) has a problem with the keyboard. The numberpad only seems to work when the Option or Shift keys are depressed (even when NumLock is on). I have checked evrything I can and do not know what is wrong. I am using the American/US keyboard setting in SysPrefs, I have StickyKeys off...

what am I missing???

TIA

My iBook is suffering from a somewhat similar problem. The function/adjustment keys are switched. I have to hold fn to tune the volume up/down etc. I believe this started after I booted the Ubuntu live CD. Otherwise I'm at a loss for us both.

Re: troubleshooting...

Tried:

  • rebooting
  • verifing the keyboard layout was US/American (vice someother language/setting)
  • searching in Universal Access for any odd settings that could impact this
  • various applications and windows to ensure the problem is not unique to a specific application
  • as AF folks for things to try, having run out of obvious ideas...

did you try another keyboard (if one available)?

Only have keyboard for iMac, not the extended...

okidoki...

so i guess you tried using it with another mac also... if the problem on another mac persists, it must be the keyboard's fault...
