Clamshell into a tablet PC

saw this on eBay and, well, I want one. Anyway I could convert my Clammy to one of these bad boys?

here's the old coolness:

nice...

one of my mom's students could use one of those. The one she has, costs $10,000 and does not do half of what that does

It can be done

I remember reading an article -somewhere- about a guy, I think in boston, who had converted his clamshell into one byt flipping the screen around and modding the case, etc. I can't find the article now, but I think it was print---- i'm sure it's been done though

You cant just "flip the screen" around... touch screen people come on!

plus finding a matching touch screen for the controller would make it the holy grail unless you can figure out which screen gemini used and their method.

If the screen is a standard s

If the screen is a standard size, you can get an overlay from 3M that just sits on top of the LCD and uses either a serial or USB connection.

3M site here

It'll add about 1/4" or more to the screen thickness, and you'd have to either wire it straight into a USB port/controller or if the machine has one, a serial port.

I know all this because I had to take apart an industrial LCD that had a shattered touch screen, but the LCD underneath was functional. I did some research on how it all went together, and it really is just the two layered up. Nothing too special to convert a plain LCD to a touch.

Im guessing they used the ori

Im guessing they used the original screen with one of these:

http://www.trolltouch.com/pages/products/ibook.html

as it uses a USB port and if you look at the pictures on ebay, one on the usb ports is covered up. If you look, the screen hasnt been flipped, but the lcd has been removed and put where the apple usually is.

Assistive Technologies

Assistive Tech used to make these bad boys. I always wanted one, but they are very expensive - and somehow I couldn't justify buying one for myself (a person who doesn't _need_ one) and possibly depriving a disabled person of the tool.

AT also made a similar model based on the PowerBook 5300 (but with a CD-ROM integrated) called the Freestyle.

Peace,
Drew

Actually he did. Added the touch screen overlay. I remember reading it and wanted to do it with my g4. Couldn't find an overlay that would fit that screen. Was actually looking for a wacom digitizer that would fit under the screen, that would be better.
