Mac hard drive in PC

I'm trying to get a mac hard drive ide (quantum) to work with windows xp. I put it in a usb enclosure and windows recognises it. It all installs but the drive wont show up. Device manager reports the device as a quantum firball which it is. It cant get any info on the drive though.

Do you think this is because the drive has mac firmware?

Thanks

T

It won't show up in Windows E

It won't show up in Windows Exporer as a drive until you format it. Right click on My Computer and choose Manage. Click on Disk Management, find your drive, and format it.

Says "Connecting to logical disk service" then "Still trying to connect"

Yay! It shows up now!

Yay! It shows up now!

But the option to partition is greyed out...and I cant find a format option. I want it to show up as a letter so I can run a program that lets me see the files on the disk...

EDIT: Found the option...but I dont really want to initialize. Why cant i get it assigned to a letter as an unformated drive? Like an unformated floppy for example.

You have to. And did you format it as FAT32 or NTFS?

A floppy drive is a removable

A floppy drive is a removable drive. Its like a cdrom drive. The hardware is there for the drive, its just missing the media. So the drive icons will show up but if you click them, you will get some sort of error if the drives are empty. But a hard drive isn't like that. It needs to be fully initliazed before it will get a drive letter. It doesn't need to be formatted before the letter will show up but it won't show up the letter unless you initialize it.

Why don't you want to initialize it? Its not like its gonna go out and bite you if you do initiallize it. I'm curious why you just don't initialize it?

I want to preserve the date o

I want to preserve the date on it...from my iMac which died. I have macopener for XP which is suppost to alow one to browse mac harddrives...but I think it only supports internal ones...not usb drives.

Macopener opens everything else, floppys, zips, cds etc etc.

Success!!

I got the harddrive to work. I purchased a standard usb to ide cable...and used that to attach the harddrive. It opened right up, with all the mac folders and files. I can not use the mac harddrive in the Pc Smile

Yay!!

Thank you. Works!

I was wondering after adding my apple ext hd to the pc whether it would recognize it. I discovered that it could find the drive (jumpers obviously set properly), but the drive was not listed. Tried to figure out how to format the drive and was getting no where until I read this article which helped me start the format to ntfs standard. It now lists the new drive and I'm waiting for the format to complete....
Thanks a million...Lucky I found this page!
