I don't know if this is hardware or software. Every few times I wake my iBook up from sleep, the display and hd don't fire up. The mac is on b/c the numlock button illuminates the led. I can hold down the power button to shut it off and then reboot, but it worries me. The problem is intermittent and I can't figure out what's wrong.

Have you tried resetting the PMU (Power Managment Unit)? That solves a lot of sleep/power saving related problems. Look it up on Apple's KnowledgeBase if you're unsure how to go about it.
Tried it. It didn't seem to help. It's been a while (about a year), since I reinstalled Jaguar. Could that help? I also recently had a "kernal error" take over my screen.
