imac original usb keybaord on g3aio

i know that i need a keyboard with a power button inorder to even turn the g3aio on, i was wondering if anyone knew if the usb apple keyboards would work on a g3aio with a pci usb card (of course). i want ot get a graphite one with matching puck mouse. i have a second g3aio that i am going to turn into a sort-of point-of-sale machine for my studio.

i am going to paint it to match the graphite imacs. i already painted my graphic machine to match the indigo imacs, and painted and apple keyboard II to match. its not as good of a paint job since i cant find any translucent blue paint for the keys. plus i dont want to remove the keys with no hope of ever getting them back in ( ihave trouble with that part). too bad the blueberry imacs are too light of a blue to match the indigo. i should have planned further ahead when picking a colour. i could just paint it to match the blueberry. oh well, now that i got so far off topic.

i bet it would function once

i bet it would function once its booted and been halfway through the boot process but i doubt that the power button would turn it on... when i used a usb card in mine, the mouse didnt work untill it was booted. i figure the keyboard will be similar...

keyboard power-on with USB card?

Dunno if that works. It does of course work with Macs with built-in USB but I have doubts about it working with addon USB cards.

I'll confirm it does not. US

I'll confirm it does not.
USB functions on the beige G3 with add-on card are not accessible until the USB driver loads.
No startup from USB keyboards. Sad

ok

i'm cool with that. i guess ill just find another apple keyboard II. i just like the smaller form for a keyboard. i have little desk space and use even my computer desktop to draw and paint when needed...

*brain fart*

what if i create a toggle from the power button of an adb keyboard. pull out that board from within...there are two seperate boards in the small adb keyboard...one has the keys, the other has the adb hub and power-on. i could slide it between the plastic and metal and...this might take some thought. if i...then i...i think i just might try this. then it will let me use the pro keyboard. the ones that came with my g4 digital audio at work. get a white one, nstead of the black...and an optical mouse. oooooooo, i am just getting all moist inside thinking about it. i just hope it isnt a lost cause. then i might have to kill some random puppy.

I even know why. There's no provision for soft power on USB. So we did an ugly hack. When the mac is off, it supplies 5V 10mAh on one fo the USB data lines. When you press the power button, the keyboard controller checks for USB power, and if there isn't any, it shorts the data lines together breifly. The mac sees this on the other data line and turns on. When the USB controller comes up, this circuit turns off.

This is why USB soft power won't work through hubs or PCI cards. We had a bear of a time getting it to work on the hub inside the monitor too.

On adb can't you just short 2

On adb can't you just short 2 of the pins together to boot a machine? Hack a momentary switch onto an adb connector?

Yep. There's a keyboardless (hey, that's not a real word!) Mystic mod that uses that for power. Looks like he used a mouse button switch and just glued it onto an ADB extension. Keen.

Power-on ADB pinout

I made a old trackball controller that has a 3rd button which I wired to be a power-on button. Pin 2 is for the power-on and short it to ground for a moment (Pin 4). Pin 2 is only used for power-on.

A blah blah of the ADB is here.

Hope that helps. Smile

I've tried it, and the answer is NO.

I have a Gossamer (Beige G3) tower, with a PCI USB card, and borrowed the keyboard from my Strawberry iMac to try it out.

No go. The PCI USB card doesn't communicate with the OS or the logic board until the system is at least partially loaded. Sorry!

But an ADB keyboard with a power button shouldn't be too hard to find on eBay.
