Hi everyone! I just put OS 10.2 on my wallstreet, and the install went fine, then I did the combined upgrade to go up to 10.2.8 and that made it even better, but it has a weird light problem.
Whenever I boot it up, I hear the chime, get a black screen for a few seconds, the get the grey apple with the spinning thing under it, and when that grey screen switches to the blue screen with the loading bar, the backlight goes out. If it is bright enough, I can see the loading bar and such. Then, when if finishes loading up, and I hear the HD stop spinning, I can use the brightness controls at the top of the screen to get it back, and then everything is fine. But, I cant turn up the brightness while it is loading up.
Also, when it goes to sleep, and I wake it up(by hitting the spacebar) I can hear the HD click around for a second, then, if its bright enough, I can see the desktop. But here, I cant change the brightness, and I have to restart before I can get the screen back.
Is there some kind of control panel that I am missing for brightness and such?
Thanks for any help,
John
go into display calibrator and do "calibrate" then go and turn it up there. It has to do with the display type not being recognized
Try going into open firmware (command-option-o-f) and punch in init-nvram (enter) and then punch in reset-all (enter) it will then restart, and then hold down command-option-p-r to reset the pram. That might do the trick. The other thing you might try is to reset the power manager by:
1. Simultaneously press Shift-Fn (function)-Ctrl (control)-Power.
2. Wait 5 seconds.
3. Press the Power button to restart the PowerBook computer.
That might fix it.
When I tried either the cmb-opt-o-f it just sat there the continued to boot, and when I put in cmb-opt-p-r it jsut sat ther as if it were dead, then when i realeased the buttons, it booted.
Can I do the firmware reset through the terminal?
Thanks,
john
You are ALL wrong. I had this problem on my own Wallstreet for a while. You can pull the pram battery, ac power, and main battery, you can reset pram and open firmware, you can roll a 100 sided die and pray to Buddah. but the fastest, easiest, and certainly making-no-sense-but-it-worksingest solution is to boot into os9. Find an os9 boot cd if holding option while booting to select the os9 system folder doesn't work. Boot into os9. Select the os9 system folder on the hard drive. Shut the machine down, now boot os9 from the hard drive, select the osx system folder for startup, and reboot into osx. Should work like a champ.
Come on, did ANYONE see that coming?
wow. i sure didnt see that coming, and its funny, when i was putting OSX on there, i had to partition the HD, and my second partion was for classic. i just havent put classic on there yet.
well, heres my plan: i will put OS9 on the os9 partition. the i will boot into os9. the back into osx. i think thats what you were trying to tell me.
so, just 9.0.4 will work?
john
well, i guess roling that 100 sided die wanst really necessary...i just needed my good ole' OS 9.0.4 CD, and 15 minutes..
that was much easier than expected, and now it works fine! yay!
thanks you very much!
John (now with a happy wallstret!)
I figured if I could save you the time yanking the hair from your head that I did it would be worth it. Enjoy the Wallstreet, those things are tanks. I can still field strip one of them down to nothing but screws and pieces in like 10 minutes
why would you wanna do that? unless you let it go swimming or something....
ive never had mine compleatly apart, but only enough to almost break the daughter card in half while upgrading the ram.

I've had quite a few Wallstreets in my time, so I've had to fix quite a few things over the years.
The first Wallstreet I ever owned was a 233. I worked at a pizza place in Boston at the time I bought it from ebay, and the day it arrived I went out and bought 256mb of ram, took it to work, and installed it, then set about installing 10.2. Well, while installing, I had to throw out a drunk Samoan who in the process got ahold of my laptop and threw it in the air and yelled "catch". I didn't. Thinking all was lost, it turns out that the only thing lost permanently was every case part and the display. I ended up buying another machine with a dead a/c in board, and pulled a swap. I've had to re-solder several a/c boards, I've swapped broken hinges, hard drives, processors. Pram batteries go bad... well, you get the idea. Now that I think about it, there's not a part on a Wallstreet that I haven't had to change at some point in time on one of my machines. If you need more Wallstreet advice, just let me know
what kind of pram battery does it use? i have a working main battery in it now, which is good for 1 or 2 hours of use. but when that comes out, so does the time and stuff.
I had a 1400 for about 5 years as my main computer (sometimes still is) and I had to change the pram battery and that was a pain. mostly because the previous owners had no care for it, so the plastic was craked, the display was scratched, the 2nd ram slot was badly broken off, and 50% of the screws were stripped. but, after 2 weeks, I got a new battery in there!
So, is a wallstreet pram battery expensive/hard to install?
Also, I am considering upgrading the processor, any suggestions?
John
Oh, and a similar thing happend to me when I got my 540c. I had it at school, and somehow while carrying it, I got hit in the head and fell. So did the 540. And, unlike your case, everything was ruined, or lost. I got sent to the principals office for making a mess in the hall, and I dont think that any people cared that my then $80 laptop was in peices on the floor. I got a flippin detention and missed the bus.
No, not really, they cost roughly $30 from a vendor, usually cheaper on ebay. Hard to install? well, it depends on how technical you are. If you think a screwdriver is orange juice and vodka, get someone else to do it. If you're around Boston by any chance, I can help you out with it. There are wallstreet take-apart guides around the net, but basically, to get to the pram battery, you need to take the display off, then take the top case off. (there's more to it than that, but those are the big parts in the way). If you can't find a take-apart, let me know, I'll write one up for you, but I have no pics, so we'll have to work through it. Also, whoever you buy the battery from may well include instructions.
Ouch, You have to remove the display to change the PRAM battery?
I skimmed the take-apart but did not see that coming...
it's a piece of cake to pull the display. If you open the port door, (start with removing battery and power, duh) you'll see 4 torx screws, two on each side. Remove the keyboard by ejecting both the battery and whatever is in the other bay, then feel or look inside for the keyboard retaining clips, pull them towards the front of the laptop. (closest to you) this will release the keyboard, lift it up and fold it over, revealing the connector for the keyboard, and remove the connector. Place the keyboard (and any parts and screws) somewhere safe for re-installation. You'll see the processor cover, it has a little metal handle on it. Remove the screws holding it down, and remove it. The cover for the brightness and volume buttons comes next, fold the display all the way open, get a long, thin flathead screwdriver, gently pry up the right side of this cover (called the clutch cover), working from right to left. When this cover is removed, you'll see two connectors that run down to the logic board, one on either side of the display, gently pull them up to remove them from the logic board. Now turn to the back of the laptop. Close the display 1/2 way, open the port door, and remove those 4 screws. You can now remove your display.
A handy note, the right side cable for the display has an EMF filter on it (square grey thing) and the cable has a slight bend in it. If you slide this filter down over the bend, you can push down on the cable to get it to seat on its pin header, this will save much time and alignment frustration.
It's a bitch for me as my eyes are bad and I have only 2.5 good fingers on my Rt. hand.
But thanks for the info ...

are you sure you want a laptop then? Just kidding, I hope the laptop works out for you, any help you need with it just let me know I'm always up for a good challenge!
An "out-of- line" post by bin -jammin in my opinion...
I am sure the laptop will be fine..
Generally, the only reason I am here is for helping others, I am proud to be a moderater on several other forums.
Laugh at this,,,
As well as having only 3 good fingers on my right hand ,
All the tendons on my left hand were severed years ago.
I have played guitar since 13 and am 50 now.
I did not let this stop me,,,
So I have ben- jammin much longer than most,
I am proud to also say I could smoke most "newbie"

Wanna talk about a challange?
Questions???

Was just making a joke. I've come to find in life I make better friends by making jokes about what usually other people feel awkward or uncomfortable around. Sorry if you didn't pick it up, or if you did that you felt put off by it. And I play bass, how about a round of dueling banjos?
Late but not never. Saw this and thought you might like to get PB Fixit's guide (with good pix) on how to reduce your PB to a bunch of parts in no time flat! Costs a few bucks, available online, and helps with those "heart in mouth moments" when you open up the patient for the first time. After that it's a snack. I was recently given two G3's by my former employer (he knew we'd want to be buried together). The display was dark on one - but a new JKL Electronics CCFL tube, (has anyone seen a thinner fluoro?) shipped expeditiously to Oz from Mouser electronics, installed with the help of the guide, gave me back a perfectly functioning machine again. I have it sitting here working beside my latest G4 1.67 Ghz powerbook and realise what a phenomenal machine it still is. True, it now doesn't have all that fancy orange Apple tape all over its insides (used standard removalists plastic packaging tape) and it has a few war wounds (nicks and scratches) from the "operation" but for a few bucks I'm ecstatic with the reunion.
