Safari weirdness

Safari is my default browser. When at home, with cable modem and Airport, I use it to read the news daily, cnn, slashdot, and c|net (and, of course, AF). Right now I'm visiting family in FL, and I'm using my v551 and Cingular internet connection to get online.

For some reason, Safari won't load certain sites, and some sites incompletely. Applefritter is one of the sites that doesn't load completely... gets part of the way up, then just sort of loads forever, spinning cogwheel in the tab, but never quite finishes loading. cnn never comes up, nor slashdot, but c|net, Google, & others seem to load fine. I'm posting this with FireFox because these Safari-troubled pages load fine in FireFox, and in lynx. I thought it might be a DNS issue, exept for this fact. I added a few "nearby" name servers to the dns list just in case, but still, Safari seems to be crippled when I'm using this cell phone internet connection.

I've tried resetting Safari, but it hasn't changed anything. I've stopped short of deleting prefs because I'm not exaxctly sure where my bookmarks are stored, and I'd really rather not lose them (before I back up and try, I guess I'd like to know where they are kept, first).

Does anyone have any idea why Safari would behave this way for this connection, but with my broadband connection seems fine?

Safari is weird...

Safari, based on the Konquerer redering engine, can be quite zippy when loading pages... as long as it gets the page information when it expects it and in the format it expects it at the time that it expects to recieve it.

One major problem with Safari is that it tends to get hung up on CSS over slower connections. I don't know why, this is purely from applied experience, but when Safari deems itself worthy enough to actually render CSS properly in the first place, it likes to do so over a fast connection.

My questions are these:

Does the "hang" happen on pages with a large amount of CSS? Are you able to load straight HTML pages with no problem?

I think you nailed it

From what I can tell, yes & yes. Nice work.... I belive the mystery is solved. Safari, then, has trouble loading pages with CSS over dialup and slower speeds.

Now... my question is this. Is it likely that someone has reported this to Apple already? I'll gladly do it... but I'm hoping someone already did months ago, as the one bug I reported they actually did respond to, which is great, but their response came like 2 years after I reported it. Zowey.

I've reported the CSS issue every time there is an update to Safari. The last thingI heard about it was that "CSS that is incorrectly formatted for Safari can cause Safari to have problems..."

To which I replied, "Oh, so Safari is incapable of reading standards-compliant CSS?"

ERGH!
