Boot off of your OS X install

Boot off of your OS X installation CD. Choose "password reset" from the menu at the top.

Well there are a few solution

Well there are a few solutions here.

There is a key combo you can use at start to choose bootable partitions. I don't remember it and my OS X book is at home.

If you have a Pre OS X CD you could boot from it and use the start up disk utility to choose the OS X partition.

Go into open firmware and change the boot partition. It is a little confusing to figure out the device naming but it can be done.

Failing that you could reset your NVRAM. This will only work if the OS X partition is the first bootable partition. Zapping the PRAM may also work but going into Open Firmware and doing a reset-nvram works for sure. The downside to this is that you loose all special boot parameters you may have setup. It will also reset your clock and may screw up your display settings. But those are easy to fix.

9.3?

I'm surprised no one asked..but Mac OS 9.3? Am I missing something..because I thought the final released version of the Classic Mac OS was 9.2.2. Maybe I'm just losing my mind...

keys

On iBook, Pismo and later hold the option key on startup, which lets you choose the startup volume. On earlier 'Books startup from an OS 9 CD, hold the C key as it boots.

If that doesn't do it, with yer OS9 CD in, hold cmd-opt-shift-del to have the 'Book ignore the designated startup device, in this case yer internal HD. Once CD begins to boot, release key-combo so that HD will appear on the desktop.

Once booted from a CD use the Startup Disk cp to set your boot system folder.

Another key

If you are stuck in OS 9 and want to start up in X without the CD you can hold down the X key and it will boot up in OSX

nixing OS 9 password with OS 8 CD

Similar issue...

I have:
Powerbook G3
System 8 CD

So, I turned on Multiple users, set up a limited user account... and found that I needed the administrator password to get back on as administrator, of course. That password has fallen upon the dustbin of history.

If I boot from the System 8 CD, what can I delete to disable multiple users or otherwise wipe the password clean? Is this even possible?

Back in January's postings there's mention that I could delete the Multiple Users control panel and Multi-User Startup extension, although it apparently didn't work for whoever tried it. Plus, not having the System 9 CD, I'd rather not reinstall... Ideas?

Thanks

OS 9 greater than 9.2.2

I’m surprised no one asked..but Mac OS 9.3?

Startup Disk control panel has its own view of OS 9 numbering, and that may be behind the number reported. In my case, OS 9.2.1 is also reported as 'Classic 9.1.2', and OS 9.2.2 as 'Classic 9.1.3'. The first is on a 12GB partition without OS X (10.2.x), and is the Previous System Folder after a clean install of 9.2.2. The second is on an 8GB partition that it shares with and was installed onto 'by' OS X. Given a bit of trouble from the keyboard, 9.1.3 could become 9.3, or it could just be a different mood of OS X on the day.

I was stupidly messing with t

I was stupidly messing with the Multiple Users feature on my iMac OS 9.2 and logged out. All I did was enable multiple users and change a few icons...Then I logged out. It keeps going back to Guest instead of my account. I can't change the settings because they are all locked from me because I am a Guest. Whenever I restart the computer or log out from guest it auto-signs back onto the Guest account. Any suggestions for my absent minded self? Sad  Beee

what I just did

I was just having the same issue (automatically loggining in as a guest in Classic) for much the same reasons (incatious tampering).

I booted up from a system CD (holding down the C key), and removed every file in the system/preferences/Multi-user items folder.

When I restarted it logged in as the owner and rebuildt the contents of the folder.

If that doesn't work I guess you can try removing the other files you see in the same area. Remember to always keep a copy of them though.
