Hi, I am new to linux and I was wondering if anyone had a walk-through on how to install Debian Sarge on a B/W G3 300Mhz? I have installed it but it keeps saying it "Can't load the x server(your graphical interface)" And if no one has instructions could someone tell me how to fix this error so it will load the interface?
Thanks!
have you treyed typing "Start X" at te prompt? that usually manually forces X Windows to start.
and since your new to linux, why dont you give Ubuntu a try? it's baised on debain, but has a full GUI by default. you can download the CD images and burn them yourself, or order a set from Ireland for free, but they take a few weeks. If you were to go the latter route, wait a few weeks, as we are just on the heels of version 6.06. it just hit Beta 2 (which I am testing), and it is better than the current 5.10. it has a new Kernal, and graphical boot menu.
plus, they have a fully PPC native version, which will run on your B&W like butter. it did for me.
or, you could try Kubuntu which is based around KDE rather than GENOME. it's a bit shinyer.
ubuntu/debain is about the only distro with a PPC build and a GUI.
give Ubuntu a try. sereously. it's awsome.

Yes, i tried typing that. I was trying Ubuntu before Debian and i didn't like it much. I didn't like the interface very much. Reminds me of windows to much. :-P. I think i'll download 6.06 beta of Kubuntu and try that, and see how much "Shinier" it actually is.
It's rather easy to change GUIs in Ubuntu. You aren't limited to the stock Gnome that it comes with. Along with Kubuntu, there is also Xubuntu which is XFCE based.
You don't "need" the custom releases to run other desktops if you are going to install it. Once installed you can add desktop GUIs through Synaptic or by using the command line with sudo apt-get install xubutnu-desktop, which should install everything you need to XFCE, and add an entry to the GDM logn screen to use XFCE instead of Gnome from the sessions menu.
Hmm i'll give that one a try too.

There's like a dozen available. I love Yellow Dog Linux.
well, i dont look into PPC linux distros anymore, now that I'm back with Mac OS. if I need linux, I'll fire up VPC and run one of the 1000's of distros for x86. PPC builds are few and far between, though it wouldnt be too hard to recompile one for PPC.
ok, so Ubuntu/debain isnt the only one, but it's the best hands down, IMHO.
the best one hands down for x86 is DSL. 50mb of penguin power. runs on my other thumb drive, which comes in handy when i want to freek out the blue shirts at Best Buy, or another x86 computer shoppe.
