Apple IIe Original vs Apple IIe Platinum?

Hi everyone.

I'm knew to the Apple IIe world, and wanted to ask the following question. What is the difference between the original Apple IIe and the Platinum? I know about the keypad, but other than that are there any differences and will all the add-on boards, software, etc... work in a Platinum that works in the original system?

Thanks
John

yes all addon boards should w

yes all addon boards should work, the same goes with software. If i recall correctly the IIe platinum had fewer chips on the motherboard, came with an 80column/64k memory card, giving it 128k total. and i think the chipset was a updated tooo.

I think that the iie platinum had a 65c02 whereas the regular iie had a 6502.

Which to buy?

So, if I was interested in purchasing an Apple IIe for primarily gaming and to check out various programs and such, would I be better off with a Platinum or Original Apple IIe?

Thanks
John

Platinum

I'd take the Platinum because of the potential for higher reliability - lower chip count, newer production date, etc.

For the most part, there are no significant functional differences except for what's mentioned here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_IIe

You may wish to pay special attention to the section on the specific changes to the Platinum IIe and it's joystick port.

For a gaming rig, I would recommend a beige IIe, with a rev B (or the latter -A) motherboard. The main reason is ergonomics - games that use the keyboard extensively play better on the beige keyboard. Also, the platinum keyboard doesn't travel as much, so it's tactile feedback is flatter. Play Microsoft Decathalon on both machines and you'll understand immediately what I'm talking about.

Platinum II

All of the above comments have merit, but if you are just
starting out and have a chance to get this computer, I would
say go ahead and get it because of its advanced features
and reliability. The older machines are fun to play with
and experiment with (they made more of 'em so it doesn't
hurt to mess with 'em) but for basic function and depend-
ability I would go with the P II. I have several Apple II
models and find that each has its own advantages.

What advanced features are yo

What advanced features are you referring to that a platinum IIe has over a Rev B or -A (second A) beige? Other than automatically being enhanced (mousetext and 65c02) of course.

Advanced features

The differences between the Apple II, the Apple II+
and the Apple IIe were the character set and RAM
memory levels. The difference between the Apple IIe
and the Apple //e were the mouse-ready capabilites
and graphics resolution.

Less chips, lower current draw, better keyboard/
numberpad layout, less heat production/more stable
circuitry, enhanced character set, mouse-ready,
less sockets to create oxidation and "chip creep",
and the better controller/drive setup (duo-disk).

Yes, the basic differences between the IIe and //e
are the mouse-ready and enhanced character set,
but usually that had to be accomplished with the
enhanced chipset which usually had to be purchased
seperately unless you bought an entirely new Apple
II unit.

I agree that the advances are few (compared to leaps
of technology today), but the convenince factors
and advances reflect the times they were manufactured
in.
