101 2-liter bottles Not 101 liters
I tried this just yesterday with like... 6 litres of Coke and a few rolls of Mentos.
You can really make the fountains go high, there's no trick to it. Just put in lots of Mentos.
Coius- that is about funny! In my book, that'd be the BEST thing to do with Diet Coke. Too cool.

i wonder, if you were to drop in the mentos, then VERY quickly screw the cap on, would the bottle explode from the over pressure? if so, i have lots of evil thoughts.
Well, it wouldn't quite explode.. (I've done it with dry ice and hot water) ...because that little volcanoe thing doesn't look like to much pressure. No, for an explosion and a really loud bang, some "The Works" and sticks of tinfoil will do just fine.* The dry ice and hot water thing is much safer.

so, in theory, one could construct a PVC resivior, with a spout and long handled ball valve. Fill said appliance with coke, drop in about a dozen mentos, then close the valve. let pressure build then open valve and FIRE!
I spent last weekend with some friends experimenting with some Coke and Mentos, and if you drop in a full roll and then screw the cap on, the bottle doesn't explode. Pressure just builds up inside. However, if you throw said bottle very hard against pavement, it'll bounce very high. And then if the cap somehow gets torn off in the process of it falling back to the ground... then it's a spinning Coke sprayer.
The above quoted idea is my project for next weekend.
I think it's worth pointing out that this reaction will produce boiling caustic soda solution, something that you definitely don't want to have spraying around when the bottle explodes.
If you want to blow up old Coke bottles, _room temp_ water and dry ice is fine, and about as safe as exploding a plastic vessel at several hundred PSI is going to get.
Well, for the the works thing, we dug a hole about 3' across and 3' deep or so and tossed it in there, and since it took about a minute, we had enough time to get about 100' away.

Nope. The 2L bottles can withstand a huge amount of pressure without incedent. A while back, my boys and I tried a pneumatic experiment that involved attaching a Schraeder valve to a bottle cap, and we pumped it up to about 200PSI. We would've gone higher, but that was the limit of our compressor. The bottle is rock hard at that pressure, and makes a cool noise when tapped with a metal tool. I thought to shoot it with a pellet gun, but didn't.
I do still have that cap & valve combo in a drawer donwstairs... :ebc:
