AirPort Express announced

This thing is waaay cool. Portable 802.11g wireless router, built-in USB print server, and--get this--analog audio out. You can stream your iTunes library and playlists directly to the device and it'll play them. The kicker? It's only $130--way cheaper than other companies want just for networked mp3 players.

Pretty cool

It should be added that Apple says it can only be bridged with their base stations. Also that the audio out can be analog or digital as the unit has a mini tos-link plug. Pretty cool though, to bad everyone has to wait another month. Seems to be Apple's thing lately.

Awesome

This looks to be an absolutely kick-butt unit. AirTunes is fantastic, but even more interesting is that this is effectively an Airport Base Station in a more compact, stylish package for about half the price. This unit doesn't have the capability to work with a dialup connection, and it apparently has a smaller user capacity (10 I think) than a "real" Airport base station, but for many (most?) users these are irrelevant differences.

Hooray for Apple!

On a final note, I just today saw a Web article saying that this unit will likely function as a bridge with non-Apple wi-fi hardware, even though such a use is not officially supported by Apple.

That would be excellent. I will, however, believe it when I see it. Acute

Media Server

This would make a sweet "terminal" for playing audio files on a media server. Now only if I could make iTunes work under WINE.

My coworker has already decid

My coworker has already decided to get two, and I might get one for myself to carry around with my new work AlBook (which I'm getting next week--woo hoo!). Having the audio-out is cool, but it would be nice if Apple had worked in some kind of remote control system for iTunes. Barring the use of VNC, I'd have to go into a completely different room in order to change songs or switch albums. Some kind of iTunes-to-iTunes remote control, so I could control iTunes on my desktop PC with my wireless laptop, would be very slick.

Incidentally, iTunes 4.6 came out today for both platforms.

SallingClicker and a Bluetooth phone is quite a good solution Wink
