How to kill an 840av (psu)

Oops.

Not much more to say than that, really. One cratered voltage regulator, a few other burnt components and I think it's dead :).

what happened?!?

hack gone bad?

Or "Other natural causes" like component failure?

On a side not, i have a PSU from a PC that half the board is shot, but the other half works. really weird, as one of the connection leads with Molex connectors is dead, but the other one works. Anyone know why this is?

Dana; Very nice picture. Y

Dana;

Very nice picture. You've definitely let the magic smoke escape from that one. Acute

Coius;

Most of the PC PSUs I've been inside have all the power wires sprouting from clusters on the PSU board. If one branch isn't working, I'd look for a bad solder or pulled trace. Should be an easy fix, but I wouldn't use it in the meantime, as a loose wire could lead to your own magic smoke escape.

actually

it's pretty much dead. there is a burnt smell coming from it, as there also is a scorch mark on the outside of the metal air grill. I think it is dead and not worth it

Mine died because it was a cheap POS and it came with my Plain jane PC case. I got a PSU from Newegg.com, but it was also a POS. I then went to my local computer store and shelled out $70 for a nice PSU with built-in surge protector, dual rails and 750 Watts of power. It is actually for a server PSU for a full tower case (has 15 molex connectors) and has 4 SATA Power connectors. It also is a bundled cable for maximum air flow. My case may be subpar, but the components in my machine now aren't (name brand memory, nice Board, BenQ DVD Burner, etc...)

This one had been an 840av that didn't start up - I think the motherboard had died before, as I tried it with multiple PSUs/ram/cpus/everything, and it wouldn't do anything more than turn the PSU, fans and LEDs on of whatever case/psu it was in.

I'd read that others with dodgy 840avs with the same symptoms had luck with leaving theirs plugged in, turned on, and doing nothing for more than an hour, then rebooting - when it should chime and boot like normal.

Instead, this one stayed on for a while - then let out an awful arcing noise and left me with that PSU. Stank too, as you could guess Smile
