PB1400CS & Linux?

I've just acquired a Powerbook 1400CS (finally, a PPC :D)

Anyhow, due to difficulties in obtaining a suitable MacOS and my general curiosity about Linux, I'm interested in installing Linux on this machine. I've heard Debian works, but I'm really in need of some kind of tutorial on installing Linux on early PPC Macs.

Anyone? Blum 3

NuBus

Being a NuBus based Mac, you'll need this page:

http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/

Which also has some howtos and such linked down at the bottom.

More info

Here's a Debian Installation manual on their site:

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/powerpc/install.en.html

Keep in mind this is pretty unsupported, and may not work correctly. For instance, check out this thread:

http://www.webservertalk.com/message220729.html

Good luck!

Thanks guys. Yeah, I eventually found that page once I started searching for the correct keywords Blum 3

Looks like I'll be sticking to Mac OS 8.5, which, incidentally I found a copy of.

YDL is for PPC/PCI arcitectur

YDL is for PPC/PCI arcitectures, not nubus. There are ways to pach the installer and kernal for nubus, but it's not for the faint of hart, to say the least.

No Ethernet?

IIRC, the Ethernet on the 1400 is unsupported.

1400 doesn't have ethernet Blum 3

However, I had a look, and the CD-ROM drive, sound, PCMCIA and networking were all unsupported at the current time. Not very useful, if you ask me Blum 3

Actually, Apple produced a network card for the 1400. Its goes in a special slot in the mobo and the port comes out the back. On my machine I use a video card in there instead...
