Unable to connect to internet but can connect to AIM

Not sure if this is in the right forum but it could be a hardware issue. Recently on my iMac 500Mhz running 10.3.9 the internet stoped working. OK so simple fix, I've done it a million times before. Well after re-setting the IP, checking all the connections...Network Status connected via built-in and has correct IP and everything looks good. So the kicker is I can sign on to AIM, MSN or any instant messenger just fine. I even tried installing a clean version of FireFox. Normally only used Safari. There is no "unable to connect" only times out after a while. This is really getting me. It's connected via ethernet and through a router. I can log into the router and even check the connected devices and sure enough it's there. Everything points to beeing connected to the internet other then not being able to actually connect to a site. Suggestions?

Take Care,

Danny

...

sounds to me like whatever is supposed to be resolving the domain names isnt working.....

instead of typing http://www.google.com try typing:

64.233.179.107

see if that brings you to google... if it does, then there is a hint as to what may be going on.

Bill is right

Issues like that point to DNS problems, the way to test is with an IP number, if the IP works, you need to review your DNS settings in your network pref pane and possibly your router.

The IP address didn't work so

The IP address didn't work so I looked into DNS settings and openDNS. That didn't work but a sugestion of resetting my router odly enough worked. I have 2 other computers running wireless through the router and the iMac beeing the only computer wired. Neither of the other computers had a problem so I never thought about resetting the modem or router. Thanks for the suggestions. Problem solved.

Take Care,

Danny

Resetting your router will ca

Resetting your router will cause it to renew it's setting from your ISP, if you have a dynamic IP address. It will also renew it's DNS addresses and settings. Of course, when you reset the router all the attached computers renew their setting if they're on DHCP, so the DNS settings get refreshed there too.
