Tiger Upgrade install on G4 AGP 450 ?

Hello:

I saw another thread where someone indicated that they ended up using a spare HD in a firewire enclosure to create an image on a second Mac. Then they connected the spare HD to their B&W firewire port and used disk utility to install that image onto the B&W internal HD. What other models may typically require the extra work to install Tiger?

Based on the post for the B&W user and my personal experience, the firewire drive option of some variety will be my only option.
But that seems like a lot of work just to be able to put Tiger OS on the G4 AGP.

Did I miss something that would make the Tiger Update DVD installation work more smoothly, or is this a typical experience installing Tiger Upgrade on the AGP?

If this is a typical experience, for the benefit of other readers, please also post a listing of other models are adversely impacted.

Background/personal experience leading to the question:

Tiger does not want to install from an external LaCie DVD Firewire drive to the AGP internal hard drive (ask me how I know ... 12 attempts later including the update, erase + new install, and archive options a few times each.) After erasing the disk, I installed Panther from CDs. Immediately after that, I tried to install Tiger (Update from Panther DVD). That still did not work.

To make a long story short, any mac with firewire will install tiger without going through all that. It does have to be from the internal cdrom or dvd rom as far as i know though.

G4 AGP 450: Tiger Install problem resolved

Hello List:

The G4 AGP still finally accept the Tiger Upgrade DVD Installation.

Per gobabushka's idea, I pulled the DVD player from the external Lacie Firewire case, connected the drive to the internal IDE bus, and even started with a new 80 GB HD for good measure!

I was able to install Panther 10.3.5 on the computer with this arrangement.

However the Tiger Upgrade will not install over the Panther system ...
until I held the CUDA Switch down for 15 seconds.

FYI: I had looked at the log created when one of the many the install attempts failed. The log indicated a problem writing to the first partition of the brand new 80 Gig hard drive (partitioned as about 35 GB X 2.)

It seem to be working OK now!
Thank you for your input and patience.

A permanent DVD RW Drive will be installed in it soon. (:-)
