You might be able to make the

You might be able to make the powerbook think the lid is closed at boot time. The trick is to find the little switch (probaly magnetically activated) that tells the machine that the lid is closed. http://home.earthlink.net/~mrob/pub/ibook.html lists the locations of the switches for some machines. If your machine is not listed, use a magnetic compass to find the magnet on the lid (or base) and then put a similar small magnet on the computer opposite of the computer's original magnet. If the added little magnet is in the right location, it should make the machien think the lid is closed. When the machine boots with the lid "closed", it should default to the external screen.

Trickier! It sounds like you

Trickier! It sounds like you would need to change something on the linux live cd. I'd bet it works as long as the Mac's native code is in control for those first few seconds and that you get the grey screen when the Linux code takes over and resets the video card. Does Live CD support external monitors on a powerbook?
