need a wintel wide/ultra PCI-SCSI adapter, any suggestions?

I'd like to put a big wide SCSI drive (or two - Seagate 181GB Barracudas - ST1181677LCV) in my wintel 2k/XP gaming box and I'd like a suitable UW or better PCI card to which I can attach it (or them.) I'd also like to spend as little as possible while staying with a well-supported brand.

anyone have any specific suggestions? TIA,

dan k

oh yeah, bootable too

I forgot to mention, it's got to be bootable under 2K and XP.

What it doesn't have to be is superfast. I think a 40 or 80MB/s (Ultra/Ultra2?) ought to be more than adequate. Though I suppose if a U160 model was cheap enough I'd be interested.

Heh, what is cheap for me? - say $20-$30 or so, though $10 would be ideal! Wink

I've got several Adaptecs of various types, and maybe a few others. Do you happen to have 64-bit slots? I've got a nice Dell OEM Adaptec/PowerDomain 39160 that's sitting unused. I've also got a few 2940 UW and U2W cards. Let me know if the capabilities you want for the system it's going in are any more than what's posted above, and I'll have a look in my stash.

re: I've got several Adaptecs

Crud. Or not. I put in a $13 eBay snipe on a 29160 and surprisingly got it for $11.51. With $4 shipping, that's pretty close to my $10 ideal. Too bad I didn't wait a couple more hours but you know I really didn't expect to win the bloody auction. Blum 3

Heh, a 39160 is real interesting if it's a pukka PowerDomain card, or if it's a PC card that can be flashed to run in my Quicksilver. I've got an Apple-ROMed ATTO PSC UW in there now, but it doesn't seem to work under OS 10.3 for some reason. I can't flash it to the ATTO firmware since it got 'updated' with the Apple flasher. Sad

I ran into problems with the numerouse $500 Adaptec SCSI cards I had bought for work. They were nice cards until apple and Adaptec dropped support for them in 10.2. I use an ATTO now, and it's very nice. If your going to get one for your Mac, go with ATTO. You could flash the ATTO you have in a PC. I did that with one of the PSCs that came with a Beige G3.

I've thought about flashing it, as the only machine I have with 64-bit slots is my B&W. The card works fine in a 32-bit slot in a PC, so long as there is nothing on the mobo blocking the card sticking down. I've even got an U160 drive I can use with it, but I've never really had a call to use the setup...
