lol @ description in eBay auction for ImageWriter II printer

So I'm reading thru this auction...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170103764007

...and I get down to where this guy says he tested the printer and read this:
This item powered on, but a test page could not be printed due to a lack of dot matrix paper."

??? Biggrin ???

Dot Matrix PAPER? Now if there's such a thing I'm gonna feel pretty stupid, but I don't recall them requiring special paper.

He was probably referring to

He was probably referring to form-feed paper, as the ImageWriter II could only accept cut-sheet (e.g. "regular" or "copier") paper with an optional adapter. Form-feed isn't exactly commonplace these days.

I've had ink jets that took form feed. There was the old Epson Q80 or something that I had an OEM of by Northern Telecom. It was small enough the it fit inside a box of paper. Thus, if you bought a large box of form feed and printed off several inches you could then stick the printer in the box and suddenly it was "portable"...

Tractor feed?

Hey,

I just gave away an ImageWriter II with an Apple //c setup and I had an Apple //c back in the day. Wasn't the paper called tractor feed? The printer had a series of pegs that grabbed sprocket holes on the edges of the paper and fed it through. That's the way I remember it but . . .

Oh yes, the good old days wit

Oh yes, the good old days with my IBM clone and my Okidata 192 with the special basket under the printer to catch the paper as it folds over and over into a pile. Then having to bend those perforated strips on the sides of the paper back and forth to tear off big hunks of them from a whole manuscript, and then your trashcan is full of the strips and you also keep finding them in places all over the house. I think my wife still has a big box of the sprocket paper that she uses for scrap paper. If you owned a dot matrix, you know what dot matrix paper is.

prrreeow...

Tractor feed, form-feed, perforated fan-fold...a long list of terms for we who remember when printing was a much louder and pixelated experience. "Dot-matrix paper" seems as good a description as any.

If I remember correctly, my first printer - can't even remember the brand...a Mannesman Tally perhaps - couldn't print anything but tractor-fed paper. Whatever it was, it cost me a fortune because it has a whole 4-kilobyte print buffer.

Ah yes, tractor feed.

I remember the days of my dad's noisy Epson LQ series, which only took tractor feed. we just gave that thing away, as well as a Epson ActionPrinter 2000, and another epson tractor feed printer.

In fact, I still hzve a big box of tractor feed paper. it's yellowed a bit, but it's still good. we rip off the preforation and use it every now and then. I might sell it off one day. I know it's still made, and you can buy a box of it for almost $200, which is a bit much.
