I come and go a lot...

I come and go a lot. A few of you have touched on many of the reasons why I do. I used to post here in the old AF forums and I had a flare and a zest back then. People here seemed to get tired of hearing me talk and I was much more interested in 68k machines anyhow and I moved to the 68kmla. Again I had a flare and a zest, but as time went on it started to fade. Partially due to being consumed with things outside of the house as I grew older, but also in part to drastic changes in the whole behavior of the forum. It's not to say that I do not like the forum, I just miss the old days.

I caught the tail end of the original 68kmla, wish I would have been there a year earlier.

Came to Applefritter when 68k discussions were pretty dead too, no idea what this forum was like at the start.

Those we have lost

To quote myself. I have used Apples and Macs since they were first available, in addition to being obliged to use also what most of the world thinks of as 'a computer' in my professional life. I too wish to see the 68k MLA arise, with the whites of its eyes gleaming in its smoke-blackened face, and stagger from the ruins into a welcoming new day. (Suitable music, off ...)

Despite the long acquaintance implied above, I didn't own a Mac of my own before two Snow 500 DVSEs became members of the household in '00, in succession to a Classic II and a Performa 400 in '95 and '98 bought for ge's BA work using (boom, tish!) WriteNow 3 and 4. There are those who gnash their teeth and rend their raiment about trayload and slotload CRT iMacs, but I could easily wish that all everyday appliances were as reliable as ours have been.

I spent several years in Apple's Discussions, and, as gently as possible, I have to suggest that there is nowhere else with the same level of expertise and experience available in such a concentrated space, not just about 68K Macs but about all Macs. That need be no surprise, given the total number of participants, and even if the vast majority of posters are but passing through from the current disaster to the next. If only 0.5% of Mac users have familiarity with the workings of Macs, 0.5% of half a million is still greater than 0.5% of a few thousand. However, because those Discussions are Apple's creation for Apple's purposes—which I am not decrying—and because also of the present way in which the Discussions software encourages pleading mendicance and a bum-rush for 'points' by a (fortunate) minority of regulars, I opted out.

68k MLA has the advantage not only of some well-informed and many enthusiastic troops, but also in that those who post there wish to go there rather than that they are driven there by present misfortune. That motivation, and the camaraderie (which is still not yet entirely missing from Apple's Discussions) are what will keep even a new and different 68k MLA viable, despite the loss of written information implicit in the crash/destruction/whatever-it-transpires-to-be. That info. is, presumably, still in the heads of the posters.

So roll on, New Day.

To finalise...

If the forums remain on a similar setup, then i'll be back around. If they split up, flip over and change drastically, and not for the better, then i'll be forced to reconsider my membership. I know just about all of you couldn't give an arse what I do, but i'm just going to throw that message in.

Stop whining about who does what, and setting rules on what we're allowed to post per forum, or even community. Just lets get the damn forums back up again to the state they were before. Sound good?

The forum as it was before it

The forum as it was before it went down was starting to suck. I would rather see the site stay down then go back to its lame state. I just hope the dang posters find another site to destroy before 68kmla comes back online.

Spitting into the wind

The 68k MLA forums will be revived, or they won't.
The 68k MLA forums will be as they were before the crash, or they won't.
The 68k MLA forums will be frequented by the same enlisted, or they won't.

Applefritter forums are not an appropriate battlefield for internecine warfare about these matters.
