Q: MDD - aftermarket DVD burner was install and the drive keeps opening sporatically

Don't have the model number of the MDD as it's at home now and I'm at work.

Just purchased this MDD for a great price.
It's a Single Processor model 1.25mhz
It came stock with the ComboDrive.
The owner had a friend install a DVD burner in the lower bay.
The drive was pulled from an external carrier.
Matsushita is the brand.

The issue is that after power up the drive opens up and closes eratically and sporatically. sometimes it just sits there open then decides to close. sometime or immediatly later it opens... very puzzling...

DVD open/close

You might want to check and see if its set to master or slave. Being a second drive it should be set to slave. You might also check the IDE cable and make sure its connected properly. Also does it show up in the system profiler??

Profiler? yes it does...

Profiler? yes it does...

I check that first when I got there to buy it...
I will have to disassemble it a little tonight then to check the cable and jumpers...

Appreciate the insight - I'm just getting into Macs and just got this PowerMac off CL for $200 - a decent buy I thought.. I'll report back after I look into it.

I have a Sawtooth G4 (AGP graphics), and every time I turn it on, it will open the CD drive, then close it again a little later. After much trial and error and using different combinations of hardware and etc etc etc, I found it only does it for me when I use the original iMac keyboard (like from the RevA/B 233mhz model), or when I used the iMate ADB/USB adaptor. Apple makes a usb keyboard with a cd/dvd eject button on it... I don't know if it was included with the G4 or not, since it DOES have an eject button on the front of the machine, but maybe the keyboard you're using has something to do with it?

I don't claim to have any idea what to do about the situation, I'm just recounting my own experience with a similar problem Blum 3
