Today while burning a CD, I got an error message. Now my CD-RW doesn;t recognize any discs, and the door seems to open at random times.
Anyone know if this sounds like something easy for a clueless clutz to fix, or is this my excuse to replace it with a DVD-R Superdrive?
I always check cables first. Pull both ends of the IDE cable (or three connections if you've got a zip or second optical drive), re-insert.
Unless you're inside the case a lot, or haven't owned it long and don't know the G4's maintenance history, I doubt the cable would need replacing. But if you've got one on hand...
If your problems persist, then I'd put money on the drive needing replacement.
And, er...it's a good excuse to get a DVD/R. (Note you don't need an Apple-specific drive. I've used a cheap Phillips 16x dual-layer with no problems)
Really? I thought I heard, though, that you needed one of the regular drives to use iDVD, which I would really like to.
iDVD, iTunes, etc., can be "fooled" into supporting non-supported drives using PatchBurn. It's free, and you can download it here:

I believe it's just the Toshiba drives that still cause problems.

With more recent OS X release more and more drives "Just Work" anyway, even without PatchBurn.
