Help, Beige G3 makes weird sounds when booting.

For some reason, when I turned on my Macintosh G3 all-in-one. It made weird sounds. It started out like this; I turned it on, chimed, after like 15 sec it made a sound like someone just broke a piece of glass, nothing happened after that. I need help, what should I do? How do I fix problem? Please respond if you an give me information. Thank you.

Yes, I believe it is the RAM

I really believe it's the RAM. I powered on my Macintosh with no RAM and it made the same noise.

like my experence, like old macintosh such as white series 7300,9500,sometime I forgot to add ram,I mean there is no any ram in the machine or no any ram on board, so when I turned on the power,it is very loud glass voice.so I added ram haste.it is ok.another reason is.one of these ram in ur computer has damaged.so you must check your ram.a little suggestion.

I checked the RAM

I checked every pc-100 Ram chip I had, they're all functioning perfectly. One of the RAM slots in my Macintosh is screwed up, idk how to fix it.

here is a simply way to test

here is a simply way to test them

remove all but one stick of ram and try if it works power it off and remove the one you just tryed and replace it with one you havent and try again. do this untill all 3 sticks are tryed ( if you have 3). or use known good working ram in it just to test

then try again in another slot do this untill you have tryed all slots with the working ram.

a easy way to clean the connectors on the stick or ram is to lightly rub a pencel eraser on the contacts. dont over do it tho.

another thing is to see if the Personality card is properly seated, the Beige G3's had a issue where the personality card starts to remove itself over time and will cause this to happen.

sometimes it is necessary to bend the metal tabs on the card to a point where you can get the card to fit better.

the personality card the the card in the slot next to the 3 PCI slots.

if that dont work try disconnecting all drives and see if the systems comes on. if it does that means something is wrong with the drives or the cables (on a AIO its easy to rip the HDD's IDE cable on the case when you move the slider case in and out) or the IDE controller.

maybe replace the Prem battery. cause Beige G3's are known not to start up when the pram battery is dead.

another thing you can try is to hold the cuda button on the mobo for about 20 seconds ( the button is right next to the last PCI slot) do not double tap it cause it can drain the pram battery faster.

good luck on getting it working.

I know what to do.

I checked the personality card, cleaned it, works fine. Whenever I insert a RAM chip into the second RAM slot, G3 boots, no chime, after about 20 sec. makes glass sound. I cleaned the slot many times, same thing happens. The 2nd RAM slot started doing this recently, Never did it before.

could be that one of the pins

could be that one of the pins in the slot has a dead spot on it (in the slot itself not allowing to make contact with the ram).

i would use a tooth pic and very gently run it threw the bad ram slot back and forth a few times and take a vacuums and go over it. just be careful and not bend the connecting pins in the slot.

and when you reinstall the dimm into the bad slot after it snaps back into place wiggle the stick back and forth a few times (dont do it to hard tho) what you are trying for here is to see if there is a bad connection between the connectors and the ram stick. also check to see if the pins in the slit are bent and if you want to try to bend the pin's back into place (that is if you see one that is bent).

i had a P1 with a bad ram slot and that worked for me.
hope this will help.

I tell you

That's a good idea. I should try that. But I never took at the RAM chip in that slot, it was in there before it started malfunctioning. And I'm also modifying this machine. It started happening after I created and inserted the heat meter. The heat meter is not connected to the motherboard at all, just the PSU.
