Guitar Construction :S

Hey all.

I've been away for almost a year now with the odd post every now and then, but i have returned and will be (again) a regular visitor of the fritter forums.

Are there any other electric guitarists on these forums, or even better guitar builders?
If so I need some advice; I am thinking of constructing an electric guitar from scratch and need to know some details on how to do so. Any help at all would be appreciated.

hey! ... i play guitar and ba

hey! ... i play guitar and bass and have experience in building them!

basically you have a few options for building a guitar:

1) make the body/neck from scratch: this is the cheapest (if you have the tools already) but the most time consuming/difficult!

2) use ready-made neck/body blanks and just screw them together: much easier but you are limited in the body shapes you can get

3) mix and match: i.e. make your own body from scratch and use a premade neck

necks, bodys, wood and parts can all be bought from Stewart Macdonald

a really good book to get is this ... i would recommend buying it as IMHO its the best book available on guitar building!!

as for pickups ... get good ones! My favourites are Kent Armstrong ones, and Seymour Duncan ones are also very good ... but its all up to what sound you want ... again the book goes into this all ...

so my advice ... get the book ... read it as many times as you like ... decide if you still want to build one ... go adead and do it!!!

Woodworking resource.

I also subscribe to the forum for Fine Woodworking magazine at www.finewoodworking.com. Although the forum is composed primarily of furniture makers, there are a number of working musicians on the board, and a few who also build instruments. Tom Leven's reply is as complete an answer to any I've seen posted on that forum. I recall that one of the members posted a link to a forum aimed at instrument makers. I'll post-up over there and get the link for you.

Many of the people on that board not only design and build amazing furniture, they've done it using hand tools they've milled themselves, in the tradition of old-world craftsmen...

...not unlike the dedicated musician who wants an instrument so personal, he's willing to build it himself!

Find a mentor, someone with experience in this field who can stand with you during the process. It's not an entry level project to build a complete instrument from scratch. A mentor will help you work safely while guiding you to complete the project to your satisfaction.

Good luck and good skill!

p.s. Tom...keep up the great work on Applefritter!

OK...a quick search on the "Knots" forum at finewoodworking.com turned up this resource...it's the musical instrument makers forum...

http://www.mimf.org

I also posted a question asking for more sites on the topic. You can reach the Knots forum at Fine Woodworking at http://forums.taunton.com/tp-knots/

My question is posted under General Discussion and it's titled "Guitar Maker Discussion Forum."

Checked out those sites and made a decision.

Because I'm too lazy and don't really have the time to make the body and neck, I have decided to buy the parts allready done and just buy pickups, strings and all the other electrics from a site I found. Have to import them from America though

Thanx 4 every1's help
