Re: could it be an open firmware

This is also my problem and yes it's open firmware

CMD+S on boot does not work due to open firmware. I'm very limited in utilizing my 12" Ibook G4 1.07 GHz Power PC 256 MB built-in. I don't have the password or admin user name to the admin account. I purchased this computer through Ebay and now I'm unable to contact the seller. I even tried removing the Hard Drive. I did not replace the drive just removed it for a few hours. I read this advice online. I've also read to take out the Vram but I didn't do this step. After taking this apart I wish I would have. Wow what a chore to get to the hard drive. How can I gain control of my new but slightly used computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have the CD but I'm prompted to give the open firmware admin user name and pw when I try and boot from the CD. Everything I've tried will not give me access to the computer. Help would be greatly appreciated

add or subtract _RAM_ , . . .

reboot, and the OF PW is removed.

Built in ram

What do I do if the ram is built in? Thanks for your help!! I found this article online and it seems the same problems exist with another Ibook owner. He tried doing this as well.

re: Built in ram

There's one slot in an iBook, it's either empty or occupied. If empty, beg, buy or borrow an appropriate stick to add.

Find a local tech

It seems that you're trying to do things with your iBook that are a bit beyond your experience.

I would suggest you use Google and read up thoroughly on the issues you're having with your iBook. People here are very knowledgeable, but it is foolish to quickly read their advice (or to quickly read the links they give you), and then rush off and to a procedure without fully understanding what it is you're actually doing.

As for your current problem: deleted Preferences are annoying, but there's no way it's worth the time and money to recover them. Just keep using your computer and the Prefs files will re-create themselves.

For deleted Applications, if they're mostly the Apple-supplied ones that come with the standard OS X installation, the cheapest and easiest thing to do is to buy (or borrow) a Mac OS X Install CD or DVD and reinstall the OS.

Best,
Matt
