Firewire Target Disk Mode on a PC?

I just got a Inspiron 5160, and plan on using it after I swap hard drives. I have been wondering how to get my data on it, short of using eithernet. The machine has a 4 pin firewire (i.Link) port on the back. I have a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. Can I hook this to my B&W G3 and somehow mount the inspiron like a hard drive on the desktop of the blue and white? Or is this not possible?

I do not see anything in the BIOS for the firewire port either.

thanks.

Not possible. Easiest way

Not possible.

Easiest way to clone one drive to the other would be to get an external USB or FW enclosure, and use a drive cloning product like Ghost or TrueImage.

Windows XP does support TCP/I

Windows XP does support TCP/IP over Firewire so you could do that and use Windows file sharing. Of course why go to the trouble of setting that up, ethernet would work just as well.

As the creator of Target Disk

As the creator of Target Disk Mode I can assure you the answer is a definitive no. What you should be able to do however is to setup your PC Firewire port for TCP/IP and then share your connection from the Mac over Firewire. The Mac will reply to any DHCP request from the PC and give it an IP number. You should then be able to see the Mac in your Network Places on the PC if you connect to \\192.168.2.1\shared where 192.168.2.1 is the IP of the Mac and "shared" is the folder on the Mac you are sharing.

You can also do the same for ethernet. If ethernet is faster than your Firewire then you should use that.

Another Apple guy here is rev

Another Apple guy here is revealed? The first question to ask, I guess, is do you still work there or have you since left?

Ok thanks. I might as well us

Ok thanks. I might as well use firewire over IP, because while it's going to be a bit more work to set up, It will be faster. My DSL modem is gigabit, but both machines are 10/100, so 400 meagbits versus 100, that's 4x faster, even if they are not running at full speed.

And let me just say I have had the pleasure to use TDM on my iBook, and it is a marvel. Just a shame it was not implemented on the B&W.

I also don't need to clone the drive, just copy my personal data.

Oh, and I am trading the 5160 and my iBook for a HP dv6233se, which also has a firewire port, so i'm set.

Oh I know, they are nice. My

Oh I know, they are nice. My girlfriend has the dv2610us, nearly identical, and I love it. The remote, I love how it fits conveniently in the expresscard slot, that's a big win over the macbooks. I also like the quickplay, though I am sad it no longer can be activated without booting windows. The webcam is also great for a consumer machine. I know because I was talking to my friend with an iMac G5 iSight, and he said it's very clear, a lot clearer than the one he has, and the quickcam chat I currently own. The touch sensitive media controls are to die for, but those blue LEDs might get a little distracting.

In fact, the 5160 was hers, but she got that HP for nothing. I was shocked. But now it's mine sans power adapter (which was just found and is being mailed to me as we speak). I was going to keep it, because I had replaced the screen, using a 14" from an 1100, who's casing is cracked around the hinges from the size (but it works, same cable), I had installed for her, and shortly afterwards she got the HP and gave this one to me with everything, including the box. I also got a little PCMCIA remote for the thing, which I never got to try because it has not arrived yet.

From the looks of it, the two machines are nearly identical. The only difference is the color, including the keyboard (which makes mine the special edition), a smaller (160gb versus 120gb in mine) hard drive, and the possibility of 802.11 draft N in mine. Both have the same screen size, same shape, both have a gig of ram (might even be the same type), vista home premium, and latch-less design, which is another thing I love.

the little blue lights are ve

the little blue lights are very touchy though, easy to hit. i dont use quick play because i took off vista and put on XP. all the drivers can be found from hp and the buttons do work for WMP very well.

yeah, I have found the opposi

yeah, I have found the opposite to be true. I sometimes have to press them more than once, more so for the volume strip. Maybe because it's an older machine, or maybe I don't hit them right, who knows.

I think you can download and install quickplay. AFAIK, you need a smaller partition for it, because it uses a compact linux distro on the newer versions, or Xp embedded for the older ones. I wonder how it works with the older ones, if they have two product keys for both versions of XP, or if they even bother to include one for embedded.

the volume keys are slow to m

the volume keys are slow to move but seem to respond well. i have found its best to just hold it and the volume seems to move quicker, or you can drag your finger over it little at a time and it will climb some. its really neat how they made that work. im a big fan of quick keys...
