Trouble Replacing Mac Classic HDD: Won't recognize new drive.

Hello all, I've been having trouble getting my Mac Classic to recognize the replacement HD that I installed. It was found (in very good condition I might add, not even a hint of discoloration!) at my former high school. The tech department however, must have decided that there was some important information on the original drive, because they removed it completely instead of simply formatting it. Since it is a Classic, I've been able to use the ROM disk key combo to ensure that it is functioning, and it works quite well, however, when I installed a newer seagate 5gb SCSI HD, it refuses to recognize it. I know that the HDD works, and I have no idea why the Classic wouldn't recognize it, so I'm a bit frustrated and at a loss. Also, I haven't figured out a good way to install an operating system or any kind of software but I guess that's another issue. So, let me pick your considerable brains fellow Apple fans!

5 gigs in a Classic

Hey,

Your Classic is booting from ROM using a limited version of System Software 6.0.3. It doesn't recognize 5 gigs of anything. Download a 7.5.x bootdisk from jagshouse or gamba and partition that hard drive into several partitions of less than 2 gigs using Apple HDSC. Then you can download 7.0.x or 7.5.x (but not 7.1) and install that if you can make floppies. If you have an old world Mac, you can make disk images and use them.

disk images

Hey,

You use Disk Copy in the Utilities folder. Open the app and then drop the file on to the box.
