repairPermissions on Old World with Panther

This is a whaddaya think...

I have a PowerMac 9600,
with 300some odd RAM,
with a MachSpeed G4/450 accelerator, overclocked the bus speed to 52MHz, so its really running at 468MHz
with the MachSpeed L2 cache enabler
with XPostFacto running Panther Build 7H63
the install is on an 18GB scsi drive
Its relatively stable.

Whenever I tried repairing permissions, it would inevitably crash (iTunes eventually crashes it, too).

So, last night, I booted into single user mode,
did:
# diskutil repairPermissions /Library/Receipts &
# top -u -s15

and it appeared to be working swimmingly, albeit slow (no cache enabler).

Right now, it is still doing it's thing, 12 hours later,
and diskutil is still using half the processor (according to top)
and mach_init is using the other half

Does this sound like I should just let it cook, or is it obviously not working properly?

I need to get to my StyleWriter II attached to it to print out some school work, so I am going to have to stop this experiment sometime tomorrow morning, but if the consensus is that this is all wrong, I'd just assume kill diskutil now and continue booting to X.

Bring forth the facts and opinions and guesses please!

thanks so much for all the comments!

I think I figured it out...

I don't think diskutil will work properly in single user mode.

But I was successful at repairing permissions by loading the full OS, and THEN running diskutil from the Terminal command line.

Now... what do I owe you?
