Information about a newton

To answer your more basic questions:

1. The IRDA port should be compatible with other IRDA devices, including IR equipped PowerBooks.

2. Yes, that is a PCMCIA slot. You should be able to use any PCMCIA card that you can find newton drivers / software for, including 802.11 wifi cards.

Here are a few tidbits for you.
1) join the NewtonTalk list at www.newtontalk.net - it's the best place to get answer to your questions.
2) goto www.unna.org for your software needs which you will appreciate when you want to investigate about what's available for use with your Newton.

Now to your actual questions
IR Port - well this is not exactly a standard IR port and depending on your model of Newton they may or may not work as a remote control with the appropriate software.

If you've got the correct software you will be able to IR information to a Palm PDA. And as the other poster indicated you can connect to a powerbook with IR. PC connectivity with IR is not so good from what I've heard. Yes that was a PCMCIA Port, you can use modems and storage cards in them. Depending on model you can also use Networking cards in it, Bluetooth and WiFi with the correct drivers installed. PC connectivity software is available at www.unna.org and will depend on the Newton Model. POP mail I'm thinking it may be possible but it may be difficult but I'm not a user of that so I'm not sure. You maybe able to connect to some HP Priners ....

These are the basic models

OMP/MMP100/Sharp ExpertPad (NOS 1.0-1.3)
MP110 (NOS 1.2-1.3)
MP120 (NOS1.x OR 2.0)
MP130 (NOS 2.0)
MP2000/2100 (NOS 2.1)
eMate 300 (NOS 2.1) but in actuality it is NOS 2.2.00 if you revert it to the base NOS on ROM

Ok, an MP110 is what you have.

The simple differences is that this is the second Newton shape offered. It's basically 99% the same as the rest of the MP1x0 Family. It has a coated surface that often starts to wear off. The NOS on this is 1.x and will limit you to run only NOS 1.x compatible software. This will prevent you from connecting to the Internet though you might not enjoy that experience or a Network. What you will have is Modem access which will allow for email if ALL conditions are met and the ability to fax. Software depends on what's available. There is a large library as I mentioned at www.unna.org Other than the coated surface, the NOS being 1.x there are only two other differences that I can think of. The surface of the LCD/Touch Screen is shiny/reflective and the PCMCIA lock is situated away from the edge of the Newton. Beyond this there is only one other difference which is that it does not have the green backlight of the MP130. This model uses AA batteries and the rechargeable packs are NiCD versus NiMH of the MP2x00 model and OMP/MP100 which had AAA NiCD's... Hopefully this will help and it's suggested that you ask other questions at www.newtontalk.net where there is a large Newton Community still active and able to assist in more in depth questions.
