Disk ][ drive sounds bad

I have 2 Disk ][ drives. Drive 1 sounds silky smooth, Drive 2 sounds like it is struggling. Drive 2 makes a much louder higher pitched studder noise when kicking off an init, it is louder when writing, and it also throws in a high pitched squeak every once in a while. It just doesn't sound as healthy as Drive 1.

Is there any maintenance I can do to make this Drive 2 a little quieter and smoother?

Remove dust, use grease

Open up the housing and (while wearing eye protection) blow out any dust with compressed air.

I think that there is a worm gear in there. You could clean it off then relube it with some heavy bearing grease.

Also, see my previous advice about cleaning the heads.

Success

I blew out the dust and then carefully cleaned the surface of the rails and the white disc shaped object that spins and slides the head assembly forwards and backwards. Much smoother now, very quiet drive.

About the grease, make sure i

About the grease, make sure if you do this, you use plastic compatible grease. Many greases will attack any plastic parts they come in contact with. If in doubt, go to a hobby store, you should be able to find plastic compatible greases among the model railroading supplies.

No grease

I didn't use any grease but doesn't most household oil and grease come in plastic containers? Just curious about that. Does that mean it is plastic safe or is the container a special plastic or a PVC product???

Also, what does the worm gear look like? I'm not sure if I cleaned it or not.
