Sony Trinitron Gone Crazy

It looks like it was a mistake to let a friend borow my Sony Trinitron monitor (GDM-400PS). He used it for about 6 months before getting an LCD, then stored it in a spare bedroom. I went to pick it up today and when I got it home, glad to be back to my dual monitor setup, the image was jumping back and forth vertically.

I know its a problem with the monitor itself and not the video card or cable. When the monitor can't detect a signal, a "no input" box appears on the screen. Even that isn't stable. The only external controls on this thing are reset to factory defaults, auto screen center, input to choose VGA or BNC connections, menu and arrows to adjust brightness/contrast and move through the menus.

The input and auto screen center on the left of the control panel work, but the other buttons don't seem to do anything. Its sitting right next to its twin and there's never been any problem with interference between the two or anything else nearby.

Am I sh*t out of luck or is there some chance to fix this thing? Even Sony CRTs aren't that much, but once you ship these monsters they aren't cheap. And I loathe monitors with the DELL logo even if they are the same underneath. HELP! I need my expanded desktop back!

Unfortunatly, you are almost

Unfortunatly, you are almost certainly SOL. Sony Trinitron monitors, although unsurpassed in clarity, are also very fragile. What has happened is your vertical synch as been shot, either by physical tension (dropping) or electrical tension (static or shock). The sync controls both the refrest rate of the screen and the stability of the vertical alignment.

This may ALSO possibly be caused by the fact that your monitor is at a resolution it cannot support. In Windows, turn down the resolution to 640x480 and see if the monitor works. If not, you have a physical problem.

If you choose to open up the case and try examining the inside, make sure to leave the monitor unplugged for 48 hours as the throwback from the CRT can maim of kill you quite easily wit hthe charge stored in it. If you have not had experience working on CRT monitors, however, I would strongly recommend against this. These days, you can get a 19" screen for 70-80 bucks on sale, you might end up having to eat your losses.

Unfortunate. This was a lesson I, too learned when lending out expensive gear. Sadly, never again for me, or you possibly.

I'll take a look at it in a f

I'll take a look at it in a few days. Guess its time to start looking for another. I've actually been wanting to pick up a 15" Sony or NEC so maybe that will have to do as a replacement rather than an addition for now.

Anybody have one they want to let go?

I can buy 20" monitors at abo

I can buy 20" monitors at about $20 each, but like you wrote, it's the shipping that'll get ya. I'm in the Kansas City area, and www.surplusexchange.org is one of the cheapest places to buy used equipment. Heck, the more you buy the lower the price gets... Sometime the total amount to buys 3 items is cheaper than to buy just one, because they don't have to pay to have the remaining 2 recycled...
