192 (196) megs of memory in a Quadra 630

Hi, all,

I recently got a Quadra 630 into which I've put a 50 MHz m68040 (underclocked the motherboard to 25 MHz, then put in a QuadDoubler), a 160 gig hard drive (I was wrong - there is no 128 gig limit on these machines), and a 128 meg SIMM which makes the total 132 megs.

In certain places on the Internet I've read that the two SIMM slot version of this motherboard (631, perhaps?) you can install 192 megs total - one 128 meg SIMM and one 64 meg SIMM, so long as the 64 meg SIMM is single banked. Instead of looking for 64 meg SIMMs which are suitable, I was just planning to use a second 128 meg SIMM.

I was wondering if anyone has more than 128 (132) megs of memory in their Quadra / Performa 630-640, and if so, did you have any issues with the SIMM in the second slot?

The 72 pin SIMM socket still hasn't come in the mail, so I figured I'd do some research while I'm waiting.

Thanks,
John Klos

I remember maxing out my 631C

I remember maxing out my 631CD, around 2000 or so before I got a PM6100. 192 is the limit, I could never get it to recognize anything more. I used 2 matching 128 modules scrounged from who-knows-where.

Haven't found a 631 yet...

I'm still looking for a 631, since my 630 motherboard actually DOESN'T have the solder pads for a second slot. I'll keep looking, though, and 132 megs isn't bad in the meanwhile.

Found a two slot motherboard

http://www.adoptamac.com/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=53

It's only $7.49! The site is listed as having malicious content, but it's most likely due to a bad hosting company. To be on the safe side, I'd recommend using Google Checkout since the server might not be secure.

I have an LC630 with the dual

I have an LC630 with the dual-SIMM logic board from a 630-DOS equivalent, and a full 68040 in place, so it's essentially a Q630. I have a single 128MB and a 16MB SIMM in place. With the 4MB onboard, it takes it to a usable 148MB. I don't have a 64MB SIMM to test with it, alas. It doesn't like any of my 32MB SIMMs.

631CD

I have a 631CD and the two memory slots are not quite the same. The additional slot can only handle memory sticks with chips on one side. That is why you can't put two 128m sticks in and get 256m. It's also probably the reason why Dana can't get 32m sticks to work. They are probably double sided. You can only use 128m+64m=192m. You can put a double sided stick in the second slot, but only the chips on one side will be recognized.

Re: 631CD

Well, yes and no. The one sided versus two sided is a generalization of single banked or double banked. There are plenty of single banked two sided SIMMs and single sided dual banked SIMMs to make things confusing. But when you have two SIMMs slots on a board, it makes things easy to check.

You can get 192 megs, too. Sometimes it's easier (and not necessarily more expensive) to just buy two 128 meg SIMMs since there's no other possibility besides getting two SIMMs which are both dual banked with 64 megs per bank, so a 128 meg SIMM will always show up as 64 meg in a single-bank-only socket.
