Dial-Up Dilemma

Hi everybody,

I do a LOT of downloading. I have dial up. Hmmmm... doesn't sound right does it. My dad wont let me get broadband. So i was wondering wether i could prevent my isp (tesco.net) from cutting me off every two hours so i could download all day. Is there a program that prevents them from doing it. It doesn't dial up from dial-up networking. It has a stupid program which connects it. Somebody help me with my dial-up dilemma

my ISP did the same thing when i had dialup. *shudder* i got one of those programs that sends a packet to the ISP every few minutes, so that the connection dosn't time out. Is it because of lack of data transfer? or because of them timing you?

Norton Utilities will do that....

I have a copy of norton utilities, one of the little programs that comes with it is "connection keep alive"(or some name like that) works really good, even on my old ISP that had a 30min timer(if you didn't have a active browser open) don't they realise some people want to play games?!?! anyway here are some free programs to do the same thing as norton:
http://www.iopus.com/acplug.htm AC-plug
http://sedivy.com/keepras/KeepRAS(the best one IMO)
http://www.gregorybraun.com/StayLive.htmlStay alive
Out of all of these KeepRAS uses the least bandwith, so it's great if you just want to leave your comp downloading MP3's(or play online games, although no one would really want to play more than starcraft on dialup)or whatever. there was a webstie that was just an random generated page of about 2kb combined with a auto-refresh javascript that did that every 2 minutes, but it seems to have gone down. o well hope at least one of these programs works for ya.

Years ago I would just set my email program to check for new mail every 15 min. If it needs to be web based and you have a *NIX or a NT based box you could setup a wget script to grab the isps home page every 15 min.

No.

It doesn't cut you off if you are inactive. If you are active or inactive it cuts you off every 2 hours, regardless of what you are doing. I'm not that bothered about it always being on, but is there a way to get it to automatically reconnect after the 2 hours?

What you could do is setup a script to ping your ISPs DNS every couple of min or so. If the ping fails have it redial the connection.

Hmm... AOL....

AOL are absoloutley CRAP!!! I was supposed to be charged £15.99 a month anytime yet they charged me £25 a month. And whats with the browser. Its slooooooooow.

Anyhow, i have tried iGetter, but it only reconnects if you are downloading with it. I use LimeWire so it doesnt automatically reconnect.

Any helpers???

Aquire will resume downloads

Aquire will resume downloads when you reconnect, provided that the P2P servers aren't at full bandwidth again... ::)
