iMac hack external IDE

I have an old 350 MHz slotloaded iMac with a broken CD. I don't want to spend the money on buying a new drive as I have a standard USB(IDE) CDR anyway.

So. I took a standard IDE cable (modified it a little so it would fit into the socket) and replaced the old cable with the new one. Unfortunately somthing stops the computer from booting. If I remove the CD it boots no problemo so the cable seems fine. The CD is set as slave. But as long as the CD is there it refuses to boot. If anyone has anythoughts on this please post.

Don't do it that way...

If I undertand you,you are referring to the IDE cable for the CD bus, not the cable used by the internal HD.

If that is the case, try replacing your IDE cable for the hard drive with a longer, two device cable. I had a similar problem on my Rev A, and was able to hook up two physical hard drives to the same cable (for the HD bus) with the CD still connected to its own bus (grant it I had to locate both HDs outside of the case). You might have better luck going that route.

On the slotloaded machines there is only one 50/40 pin cable that goes to the cd and hd. Its not the same as on the older models.

Check to make sure that the cable is plugged Pin 1 to Pin 1 on the CD-ROM. Apple has been known not the keep to the "red is pin 1" thing, eg. 630 IDE connectors.

I took a long 50 pin cable and modified it to have two 40 pin connectors on it. I made sure the pin 1 on the 40 pin connectors was on the same side as the pin one on the 50 pin connector. Have the hard drive as the master and a full size cdrom as the slave. iMac is no longer in an iMac case by the way...
