Apple I Board Dimensions

Greetings All,

I have looked for the actual physical dimensions of the circuit boards that made up the Apple I ( the actual board itself and the cassette interface card). I have seen a bunch of "I believe it was..." and " I think it is..." statements, but not an actual and real dimension listing. Even those that have 'cloned' the board don't seem to mention it.

I very well may be blind, and if I am I apologize to any an all (not my intention to be ignorant), but can anyone who knows the physical dimensions please advise me on them; I am starting out on a long journey to recreate it for myself and want to do the best I can without using someone else's creations - I know this may be silly to some, but I would like to try anyway.

Thank you to anyone who can help, I love all things Apple and will never be able to afford an actual board so this is my way of learning, creating and owning one of these truly ground breaking computers.

I don't recommend that you go down this path. The time, complexity and cost of developing your own board is way too high. Both the Newton and Mimeo boards are inexpensive compared the to cost of the actual components. Get a board and start buying components as you can afford them.

Thanks, but as mentioned; I know this may be silly to many, but I am going to do this anyway. I want to be able to have made my own, and I am already aware of the costs.

Again, thanks, no offence intended - but I am looking for the dimensions of the boards here; I don't really want discussion around how viable the project may be.

Thank you and have a great end of your week.

Re: Apple I Board Dimensions

If it helps, my Mimeo is 15.5 in x 9 in. It appears the charitybuzz auction lists the original at the same size, it also lists dimensions of the other boards:

Apple-1 Computer, copyright dated 1976 [15.5" X 9"], from the first of the two runs of printed circuit boards

Good luck with your project, wish I were smart enough to even think I could start something like that.

The Apple 1 board was almost the same size as a piece of paper. (Not letter paper, but some other size)

Thank you so much for that information.

While I don't think my smarts are there yet, I'm learning so much as I just head out, and already it's a blast!

Thanks again to all for insight! - and thanks for the help smiggly and Dog Cow!

Actually that was the Apple II motherboard. The Apple-1 is slightly bigger than a US legal size paper, but in case anyone needs to know, it still fits in a legal size bank storage/safety deposit box, which is where I expect most of them sit today.

Re: Apple I Board Dimensions

I hope I'm not steering you wrong here, but mounting hole spacing can be derived from my Apple 1 enclosure page - it's been a long time and a quick search didn't turn up the evidence, but I'm pretty sure these dimensions were originally taken directly from Wendell Sander's original Apple 1.

Good luck, it's a fun project if you approach it with the right attitude and a lot of patience.

Thank you for your reply Mr. Willegal, I have been through your pages and it was your project that provided some of the additional inspiration to actually begin on this course. I truly appreciate your guidance on this topic and any other advice you would have. I will look into the hole spacing and adjust my layouts accordingly (when I am there hahaha)

Thanks again to you and all for your continued assistance, this is already a great project and I am just in the infancy of it!

Re: Apple I Board Dimensions

A quick measure gave me 394mm x 229mm for the board.
