Before taking apart iMacs (one dead) of two different generations to find out the hard way...
Does anyone know from experience whether the modems in early and later iMacs (say, 233 and 400 MHz resp.) are interchangeable, pin-wise or socket-wise? Any tips, hints, pointers, or heads-ups?
I ask because there's a need to stick with the GV fax software/avoid FaxSTF...
well tray loaders and slot loaders have different size and shape of cards ... so i dont think they can be interchanged ...

I have a tray loader modem going for cheap. Message me if your interested.
They are both RS232 serial modems with a standard audio line going back to the machine, but they are very differently shaped, and you'd have to make an adapter board in order to make it functional (not to mention fitting it in there).
neatly? I'm less concerned about neatness than functionality. I wouldn't object strongly to a pro-lapsed modem, frankly. With the pin-to-pin correspondence for the connectors involved, is it serious work to make the switch? If not, where/how to find that correspondence?
So does that mean if one were to pull the modem from a slot-loader and attacehd a few wires to the right pins one could use it as a simple serial port? That could be fun if I ever mounted an iMac mobo in a vehicle and needed to attach a GPS... (using some GPS units over a USB -> serial adaptor doesn't work well w/ certain fun uses)
