Macintish 12" RGB monitor ans APPLE II?

Hi all,

I managed to salvage fromt he tip a Macintosh 12" RGB monitor. Is there any way I can use this with my Apple IIe? Can I get a RGB card for the Apple IIe and maybe a dongle?

Cheers,

Rob

I don't think those early Mac

I don't think those early Mac monitors will work with an Apple II because they are designed for very specific resolution and frequencies that the Apple II and most of the RGB adapters are not designed for.  The RGB cards for the Apple II are normally designed to work with the far more common PC standards like CGA or VGA.  I could be wrong though, maybe there were adapters back in the day, I just don't remember seeing one like that.

I am thinking that is an analog RGB monitor, but Apple II RGB was digital unless there was a certain card for analog. If there was, I doubt it would run at the right specifications for that more modern monitor.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking Here2Learn.  Those Mac monitors were usually so specific they would only work with a very limited number of Mac models/video cards.

Horizontal Refresh

I'm pretty sure most (all?) Mac monitors are all 31kHz horizontal sync, whereas Apple II's (even the IIgs) require 15kHz monitors. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here though.

I actually tried making one

I actually tried making a dongle to attach my 12 in Mac LC monitor to my IIgs, unfortunately, all I got was a black screen.  Without the dongle, I get a blue screen with garbage.  I also tried it with a couple of VGA monitors and got the message "Unsupported Resolution" on both, so it's possible it works with VGA, but not with my monitors.  I haven't tried with my //c, but I think the pinouts are different, so I doubt it will.  If it's true about the refresh rates, then that explains a lot.

If those monitors can handle

If those monitors can handle VGA then these cards seem to output Apple II to VGa.

The problem is, as far as I

The problem is, as far as I know that card isn't being produced commercially or sold anywhere.  So it may be very difficult or impossible to find one.  I don't know how many were ever made, it may be nearly one of a kind.

It's a Macintosh monitor, not a PC monitor.

Well yeah, and even if he had a PC monitor, the card that they were talking about is unobtanium.  There are other VGA solutions of course, but as you say...  He needs a PC monitor for that.

It is now apparent that your best solution is to get a Macintosh computer, keyboard and mouse to go with that monitor. :-)

I'm kinda curious if a VGA to Macintosh monitor adaptor will work?  I know that it works to connect later Mac monitors to a PC, so maybe it would do the same for a VGA enabled Apple II.
