655-0101 Disk Controller Card

Hello group,

a friend gave me a 655-0101 5.25” controller card to play with because someone ripped the ribbon cable off. All that’s left are the 20 posts coming up out of the board. I have a DB19 and ribbon cable to make up that end but would anyone have any suggestions for attaching it to the card? I could solder each wire directly to the board itself but I’m looking for something a little more sturdy than that. Be great if someone had a cable they’d want to sell but until then I’d like to come up with something.

Any suggestions are appreciated

Randy

The "correct" way to repair

The "correct" way to repair it would be to unsolder the old connector and solder a new one in its place (after crimping a new piggy tail to it of course).  That said, I don't see any problem with just soldering the wires directly to the board.  If you are worried about sturdiness find some way of clamping the ribbon cable down to the board.

FWIW, I bought a card like that on eBay a few years ago cheap.  I think it was well under $20 including shipping.  I bought it just so I could rob the PROMs off of it to repair a regular Disk ][ Controller Card with one of the PROMs failed.  Since then I think I robbed a couple other chips off of it also.  But I guess if I had to I could get it working again.  Just not really a big need since I have at least a couple good ones around.
