CDA's and NDA's

I'm setting up my GS for the first time in 25+ years, I have forgotten nearly everything. Humbly I feel pretty dumb now, vs when I was much younger and knew a lot about my //e and IIGS. I found a bunch of old floppies that I have kept from my Apple II days and one of them has two folders on it called NDAS and one CDAS. Through process of searching my GSOS System folder I found that NDA's are New Desktop Applications (??) and they are what show up under the 'Apple' symbol on the far left of the menu bar. I copied a few in at a time not to rush anything, nor to get anything stuck. Well it happened, GSOS would boot and then hang. I managed to remove the 'custom' NDA's that I copied into the folder and have yet to spend time to find out which one it was.

That being said, the reason for the post. I'm curious where I can find out more about the NDA's. Like where can I find more? Is there a list someone has of ones and what they do?

Also CDA's, since they are dubbed 'Classic Desktop Apps', where are these used? The control panel? It's so frustrating knowing that somewhere buried in my brain I used to know this, but now I fumble around just like I'm starting over.

I have tons of questions about different things but I think I'll just start here.

Thanks, Steve

New Desktop Accessories.

Unfortunately, there's no "App Store" for CDAs/NDAs. Each of them typically did a single thing or a small number of related things. Not really unlike phone apps these days. Written by anyone from rank amateur to Apple itself, they likewise range in quality and utility in that same phone app sense.

Also CDA's, since they are dubbed 'Classic Desktop Apps',

Classic Desktop Accessories.

As "classic" desk accessories, they're text-based and so flip the IIgs into 40 or 80-column mode if you're in GSOS. CDAs can run on a GS in 8-bit ProDOS, while NDAs only run in graphical GSOS.

Some development info from a very reliable source:

Re: CDA's and NDA's

Thanks for the explanations of everything.

You mention there is no App store for any Apps/Games/etc for the Apple II too bad there isn't a centra repository that at least points to the various (that I have so far seen) sites that house software, text files, etc. Maybe that could be a web project for me, and anyone else who would want to pitch in??

David or anyone, is there a place where people have NDA's for download?

Thanks David for the clarification and information.

I wonder if a modern C# programmer could learn to write programs on an Apple II platform.. hmm..

Here's a web site you will want to check out, since it caters exclusively to the GS: http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/

You'll find LOTS of NDA's there, in fact I think there are several disk images of just NDA's and CDA's. It's well worth the time to look around and see what else you might want to download. You'll want to bookmark it also as the site is always being updated with new items.

just my two cents worth.
(P.S. I'm just starting into computer programming but figure down the road it will help me learn to program both the GS and the //e and //c.)
