IIC+ and Floppy Emu Smartport not booting ???

Hi all,

So I have this new (to me) IIc+ that seems to be working fine. I can boot on an external 5.25 disk without problems.

Now comes the Floppy emu.  No matter what I do, I can't get the computer to boot n the floppy emu while emulating a 3.5 drive of a smartHD.  I know the images I am using are working fine, because I tried them on another computer.

For example when I select Emulation mode = Smartport HD on the floppy emu, and select an HD image. I reboot, the floppy emu shows that it has thre right hd image selected, but the computer screen shows : Unable to find a bootable disk online.

I tried booting with ESC pressed, no luck, tried pr&5 or pr&6, still not booting.

Is there some magic IIc+ trick I am missing ?

thanks

The FE may not be fully

The FE may not be fully booted and responding from power on by the time the IIc+ scans slot 5. Should be able to do an OA-CTRL-reset from there, and boot into the FE.

Also, not sure if that was a typo or not, but it's PR#, not PR &.

it was a typoi more or less.

it was a typo more or less. I grew up using an apple II in France, and it is &6 for us :). but I did the right command in this case.So pr#5 or soft reboot do not help. Still shows the same error

Im looosing hope :(

Are you using the latest FEMU

Are you using the latest FEMU firmware? The external SP volume should show up as S5,D2. Because of this, you won't always be able to boot with a PR#5 command.

You could also try the ROM5X firmware.

This is an older video

This is an older video showing Nox Archasit booting via hard drive image on a IIc+. If you jump to about 5 minutes, you can see what was done.

Note, this was done before FE added menu support for smartport, back when you had to name files like hd0-nox.hdv, or something to that effect. Now it's all menu driven, so you can ignore any talk about file names.

Hi all,  thanks for the help.

Hi all,  thanks for the help.  I installed a Rom5X, but still no luck.

1 can boot a 5.25 real floppy from the externall/smartport drive.

2 I can boot a 5.25 via floppy emu connected to the external/smartport drive

3 I can NOT boot a 3.5 or a HD via floppy emu connected to the external/smartport drive.  It keeps saying no bootable device detected.

I did try the steps used in the Nox video above.

The rom5X seems to be working fine. When I run system diagnostic, I get a system ok message back.

annoying :)

also, I found this installed under the monitor chip in my 2c+

clockpro 4000-90. ?  I can't find (yet) any reference online, but I assume it is a clock chip add on ?

Not sure what else to say

Not sure what else to say about the booting issue. Is the internal 3.5 working? If not, maybe something is wrong with the IWM.

That is a no slot clock, probably very similar to this one.

No Slot Clock

It's a "no slot clock" from Apricorn, based on the Dallas DS1216 clock chip.

You need to invoke the ROM 5X

You need to invoke the ROM 5X internal menu by booting with the option key held down.

Anyway, once you're in the ROM5X menu, you can force it to boot from the smartport.

This is the only way to boot a 3.5" drive or a hard drive device from the smartport.

That is a No-Slot-Clock.  I

That is a No-Slot-Clock.  I would keep that, provided the internal battery is OK.

If it is dead (it very well might be) there are mods out there to rig an external 3.3V lithum cell like a CR2032 to power it.

If you do wire in an external battery it is recommended to perform a bit of "surgery" to disconnect the internal battery which is encapsulated in potting epoxy on the underside tof the chip.

If you look at it in the right light you should be able to see the shadow of it.  I use a Dremel and a small burr to grind away the epoxy, expose the cell and then grind away the metal connection to it.

Then I re-epoxy the area to prevent cell leakage.
