Problem with Powerbook 1400c

My Powerbook was working fine until yesterday when I picked it up and noticed it was hot to the touch. It seems for a few days it never went to sleep when the lid was closed. Now the video has problems. When booting there is lines running all over like a 1950's tv losing reception. When it is at the desktop it is much better but all the fonts are bold. The boldness seems to be from a double image. Like the image is doubled but only offset a hair to the right. The top left of the screen's text areas are more red than the rest. If you can imagine an old tv and someone messed with the video adjustment pots.

Any ideas? Is the video card burning out or did it get too hot?

Thanks

Sounds to me like the heat caused some of the BGA pads on the graphics chip to fail, similar to the RROD with the Xbox 360. You'll need to identify the chip and reflow it; if your 1400 is important to you, you'll want to find an electronics repair shop that can handle the task (doing it yourself usually does not result in a permanent fix or can make the problem worse). Otherwise, start sourcing a replacement motherboard.

Re: Problem with Powerbook 1400c

I was afraid that was the problem. I wonder why it didn't go into sleep mode when the lid was closed. I do have a Powerbook 1400cs. Is the motherboard the same as the 1400c and just different lcd's? Or is the graphics chip different? Should I replace the swap the motherboards or just swap the LCD panels?
