I've been using my iBook G4 since June, 2004, and never had any problems with the laptop freezing until I upgraded to Tiger OS X 10.4.4.
I have Tiger installed on an external HD. I haven't used Tiger that much yet. The biggest problem I've noticed is with iTunes, which keeps freezing. I can't force quit, and do anything at all, except restart the computer with Apple/Control Power Button.
This has happened many times. When I run OS X 10.3.9 from the internal HD, I have no problems with the computer freezing. When applications freeze, I have always been able to Force Quit, then restart the application with no problems.
I've also had problems with Webstractor 1.5.3 and the newest version of Firefox 1.5rc.1, both also causing the laptop to completely freeze.
Has anyone else encountered this same problem? Is there a fix? Thanks.
So... are you trying to use the same copy of iTunes under both OSes? I can see how that would cause problems, as mismatched versions of apps and the stuff that their installers place elsewhere, or between iTunes and Quicktime, could potentially be very problematic.
First thing I'd do is make sure that Quicktime is up to date in both OSes, and I'd (re)install the newest version of iTunes on the Tiger disk
I think the problem may have been from trying to use the same iTunes for both systems (10.3.9 and 10.4.4). I now have the latest version of iTunes 6.0.3 for each system.
So far, Tiger, now updated to 10.4.5, seems to be running much more smoothly!! And a bit snappier than Panther on the internal HD. My external HD is 7200rpm, which probably helps to speed things up a bit.
Now, if I can just save up for the 1GM RAM chip!
