OK I salvaged the USB board thingy from an old imac keyboard, and it works fine as a 2-port USB hub; but it's so ugly, and takes up a lot of room. What I want to know is, can I just solder the 2 USB ports in parallel to the main lot of cables going to the plug? Or does it need all the chips n things on the circuit board?

It needs the circuit board.
actually, a usb line can handle two parallel plugs, but no more. you dont need the chipset for only 2 plugs.
Can someone verify that, or at least that it won't fry my USB?
